Vacant Lot...

Howdy--

In my travels last week, I noticed a recently cleared lot in the older part of town. I made a note of the intersection to be able to check on google earth what the layout of the structures were. It was a large lot that had 3 homes on it. The first chance that I had to hunt it was Saturday. When I arrived at the site and made a quick walk around I was pleased not to see any indications of it being previously hunted. I began the hunt with the 6X10 coil on my V3i and quickly dug a wheat-cent at 3" followed by several memorials. Then I got a nice signal in the 80's and dug a 15' piece of copper pipe. Often after removing pipe that size upon rechecking that area I will find coins or other good targets that were masked by the pipe. Well, first I had to dig another 15' piece of copper pipe that ran parallel to the first one, THEN I pulled out a couple more wheat-cents. I worked my way towards where the front door of one of the houses was and got a solid 13-16 reading that pinpointed with 22.5 KHz dominant at 3". I was expecting part of a pull tab or small piece of aluminum. What a surprise it was to dig this mariners crucifix! It's marked 14K but it's obviously not gold. To confirm my suspicions, my friend shafer44 tested it for me. It looks like copper but I'm baffled by the low gold reading? Anyway, after digging several more memorials and clad, working my way back to the truck to call it a day I dug the 1935 merc. And that was my last signal for the day. There is still plenty of ground left to cover so I'll have to give it another try. Best of luck and...

Good finds, Blind Squirrel!! "still plenty of ground to cover"??????

The low VDI might not be lying to you, worth investigating a little further. If it was copper, it would read MUCH higher. Did you try scraping it a little?

14K gold has a funny way of looking copperish, I have found several 14K objects that had that patina. so don't be too quick to discount it.... That's also why it pays to take a good close look and test it.

Don't scrape it.... use a muslin plashing wheel and fine metal polish.... that will clean up the patina and let the real shine come through.

Thanks VaCoinAddict. Even a Blind Squirrel gets an acorn every now and then!

Thanks for your input johnedoe. After "rubbing" a corner on the back, I can see the yellow coming through! Best of luck and ...

Larry, I agree with you. I do trust the VDI's and there is no way, given the size and weight of this find that it could be copper. I took your advice and and rubbed the edge on the reverse and sure enough the gold metal was revealed. Thanks. Best of luck and...

Johnedoe, I'm one of those guys that prefers to keep his finds in close to original dug condition. I usually just gently rinse off the surface dirt and that's it. Believe me when I say that I didn't "scrape" or damage this beautiful find. And thanks again for your input! Best of luck and...

Nothing wrong with that..... I think in the case of that medal I would keep it as found too, but jewelry I tend to shine back up.
Keep up the good work and I guess saying Happy Hunting would be kind of a given after finding those mercs and that medal.....:detecting:
