After 2 hrs soaking in peroxide and drop of liquid soap per Dave Poch

KK: Looks like you have gone about as far as you can go. Peroxide with soap worked well. I am impressed. At this point I would heat button in oven (get a small toaster oven at a garage sale or at Goodwill if you are going to do a lot of this) to drive all water from it and then put Renaissance Wax on it to brighten it up a bit and to protect it from further corrosion. RW is what the big dogs use to protect metal and was developed at the British Museium for that purpose. Its available from the Internet. You will probably never get it as good as your local examples but you will come close and you will still be able to identify itas a seal button. Half the fun of metal detecting is preservation/documentation.

KK: If I ever write about the technique of cleaning buttons (which I am likely to do in the future) could I use your Illustrations of before and after treatment? I like you graphics.

No problem, help yourself. Keep in mind that the sample front/back views of VA buttons are not my pics...they came from the following 2 websites.
http://www.civilwarbuttons.com/csstatelist.htm
http://www.relicman.com/butcvas.htm
I have annotated pics of just my button if you prefer. Thanks for the info, I am going to order some of that Renaissance wax tonight.
