V3i with SEF 8X6 Coil

Thanks for all the recommendations. This Combo is great for what I do. I went back to the old House I have been hunting and it was like I had never been there.

On the stock Coil I was using factory settings and I had heard that the SEF could not take Maxed out sensitivity which is what I found as well. I did find Pennies at the bottom of previous plugs. I actually gained some depth but I did turn up my machine.

I now have a 5lb Coffee can full of Clad from the V3i so I am pretty comfortable with it. I am rountinely finding Zinc pennies lower than the speaker on my Pro Pointer and Pin Pointing with the SEF is right on. Depth shows a little more shallow than it actually is.

I think this is a War Nickle

It rang up VDI of 21 instead of the usual 19 and it is 1942.

Howdy Daddyflea--

I can't read the date from the picture. The easiest way to determine if it is a War Nickel is to look at the reverse. If it has a large mintmark P, D, or S above Monticello and is dated 1942-1945 it is a War Nickel. In 1942 there were 2 types - the early ones were of the normal nickel composition and do NOT have the large mintmark above Monticello. The latter 1942's were of a Silver alloy and have the large mintmark. Good job with your new coil!! Best of luck and ...

Happy Hunting!

Got home and cleaned it up. It is 1942 but no Mint mark. Although I have found War Nickles in the past, this one is not. It has no mint mark. Now I am wondering why the VDI was higher.

Can anybody tell me if there is something on the V3i that says I am in Ground Balance Mode? My machine does not act like it is trying to Ground Balance. I am having to hit the Buttons multiple times before it seems right? I can see nothing on the screen that says I am in the right mode.

Only the enter buttons and switch are involved in balancing. I always manual ground balance, always.
Read this.

Thanks Rob but that is not what I was asking. I am trying to do a Manual Ground Balance by using the Trigger and enter button but it does not seem to be working or going into that mode every time. I was wondering if there was something on the display that tells me I have entered Manual ground balance.

If mine is actually going into this mode it must be way way off.

Your answer would be NO. If you read the link you saw that in some cases it can take many pumps to balance. Once in search mode IF you are in autotrac the detector will eventually balance. You can miss targets until it does. That is why I always do the manual balance.

The higher the gain and minerals the more pumps may be required.

I think I may have the same problem as the guy in the Link no real clean place to balance.

That's pretty trashy. Just clean a small area of targets. It's worth the trouble.

One think to check. In some cases the V3i can lose balance while people are digging targets. After digging a target check the balance. If it is off, this could be happening.

If you are using auto track, you could lay your coil flat on the ground so it always sees ground. If the coil sees air only, balance will change. You can also hit the menu key before digging, if you can remember, and pull the trgger when ready to hunt again. Pressing the button stops tracking.

Also if you come back to the same site and haven't done another balance the V3i will keep the balance from the last time.

Thank You Rob that is really good info. This particular place has a coin of some sort every foot or no more than two feet apart. Sometimes I think kids just empty their piggy banks by slinging coins everywhere. This House has been a Rental for the last 20 years One Bed room but it is really old and low rent in a good part of town. Lots of moving in and out. The St Augustine grass is thick so the coins are already out of reach of my Golden Saber II.

Question Rob. I always hit the "menu" button before I lay the V3i down to dig, assuming all auto tracking is then halted in that mode.
Is that true?

You are correct Martin.

Just to make sure I always do a quick check on the ground balance even though I have pushed the menu button while retrieving a target !!
