I like to use Mixed Mode, but the discrimination signal is a little louder than the All Metal. I have used the "balance adjustment" all the way left and right but i hear no difference.

Is the balance only for plug in headphones?
 
Which balance are you setting? You want to use the Target volume setting.

Target Volume - Select how loudly a metal target beeps differently depending upon the audio output
