V3i Upgrade Report.......Some Initial Observations.

Gotta love White's Customer Service!

Yesterday I was told it was being shipped via FedEx, and I had it by 11AM this morning! It was hard to accomplish anything around the house knowing it was sitting there, so at around 4 PM I got out to test it for a little while. Not much going on as far as finds, but I did try some of the features:

Stereo Mixed Mode: I am not sure if I like this feature yet. It was a bit loud in the default settings. After trying it for a little while, I went back to the normal Mixed Mode.

Polar Plotting: I like this feature. Coins read nicely in the NE quadrant, while many trash signals (even those with high VDI numbers) gave squiggly circles. Hot Rocks that sometimes read like good targets also gave squiglies. I am not sure if I will replace the Analyze screen, but I will try it for a while and see which is more useful.

As performance goes, I used a modified relic program with RX around 10, Disc Sens around 89 and AM Sens around 74. Ground Filter was 7.5 Hz High Band. It ground balanced better than the V3, reaching a quieter balance then I was able to get before the upgrade. I did have a hard time keeping the ground balance from drifting, even though ground conditions seemed consistent. I lowered the track speed a bit, but it still did not keep the balance well. Eventually I had to switch to Lock Track.

I think it was a bit stabler than the V3 but there were no real deep targets to get. I did detect a clad quarter at 4 inched that gave a VDI of 84 which is a bit higher than the typical 83 VDI. I also detected a Merc at 4 inches and the VDI was around 76, which led me to think it was a Wheatie. This was in single frequency so the VDI may not have been as reliable.

I am looking forward to giving a real test when I have more time, so stay tuned.

Looking forward to what you have to say later on Neil. I have had mine for a few months now and still have a V3 also and I am still on the rail about the two.

Hey Neil. The stereo mixed mode has a audio boost adjustment. With the right mix of "target volume" and "audio boost" I'm sure you'll get this tweaked to your liking. It seems like the discriminate mode gets better depth in the stereo mixed mode than it does in the regular mixed mode. Not sure why but it may have something to do with being two separate audio channels instead of just one. In regular mixed mode it seems like the all metal channel is primary and therefore stronger. It may be just my imagination but I prefer stereo mixed mode the best.

Neil, it took me a while playing with the tone, and audio boost to get the stereo where I liked it. Also because of my hearing changing which ear all metal was heard changed the audio for me. I like it now.

Hey Doug , I'd like to hear about that rail you are on even if you have to make a new post. Rob
