V3i sensitivity to small gold?

Southwind

Well-known member
Too hot to get out and hunt so I did some testing with the new V3i and was a bit surprised. I've got several pieces of gold I've found with my DFX so I did some testing with the V3i. On my DFX I just load the factory Coin & Jewelry program and adjust discrimination to accept down to -20 for my tot lot hunting. I did the same with the V3i and tested a 14k pendent and earring I found with the DFX, but the V3i would not detect either one. In all-metal the V3i found them just find but why do you think it would not find them in motion mode? I set the V3i's discrimination to accept down to -20 after loading the factory Coin & Jewlery program.

Here is a picture of the 2 pieces it had problems with.

Something is not right, the V should not have any trouble detecting those. Double check your discrimination settings.

I agree, I have a very small gold hoop that I found that comes in at 0 and its alot smaller than the one you have posted.

Good to hear! I couldn't imagine the V3i not as sensitive as my old DFX.

I'll double check my discrimination settings. I did twice when I couldn't detect them, but I check it extra close.

What I did notice was it was giving a minus VDI number on both those pieces of gold. In fact I saw a -20 several times on the earring. I had my discrimination set to accept down to -21, or so I thought, and it still wouldn't do anything but crackle.

The V is far more sensitive on gold than the DXF and I have heard of finds with the V in the neighborhood of 1/2 grain. That is very small.

In prospecting mode my v3i will pick up a sliver of gold that weighs .005 of an ounce at 2". It will pick it up over 75% of the coil. It may even weigh much less than this as my scale will not even pick it up half the time.

My detector will not respond in any other program to this small of gold and I am glad. Could you imagine how much foil you would have to dig if it did?

It would take over 200 of these to make an ounce. Here is the scale of it. " ___ " Same length and relative thickness of the line between quotations.

Do you really want to dig grains of sand?

OK user error! Apparently my test gold was laying atop some iron. You see I failed to check the ground before I laid the gold down. It air tests just fine.

I took the V3i to a couple of tot lots this morning and while I didn't find any gold I did find some very deep coins we have been missing for a long time. In fact, I dug 5 coins that were extremely deep in the sand that none of my other detectors had found. And that does include my E-Trac.

Oh No.....SHSSSSS! Please dont let anyone else know that this is the deepest seeking discriminating metal detector in the world. I am seeing them pop up in my local hunting areas and they are cleaning it all out, I am happy for Whites but a bit confused as to whether or not this is a good thing.

And dont blaspheme we all know that the e-trac is the deepest....:drinking:

I like the places where they have cleaned out all the clad:poke:
Makes it better for us e tracers to find the good stuff.
Just ribbing a little, don't get bent out of shape anyone!
A little fun between forums is good,I just love detecting.
you all take care and best of luck to all.

Just don't start posting how the E-Tac is far inferior or we will have another discussion:starwars:
You will never see me posting any negative stuff about the V3 with the possible exception of its taste for crown caps just like the F75.
I have even posted that I think the V3 is better than the E-Trac for beaches and prospecting when gold is your primary target.

Believe what you want ! Some like what they have others don't .Some just like American made. One thing in common we like detectin. Yazoo

In my extensive bench testing, it became apparent that in 22.5 KHz the V3 is much more sensitive to small gold than in any of the other single or multiple frequencies.

Very little slamming of the E-Trac around here as we all know it's a good box for some very accomplished detectorists. Your right on the V3i liking only certain types of crown caps but from my experience, it has been extremely rare to pull one out thinking it was a quarter. (It all went away after getting time in on this machine I guess and just haven't had to deal with that for quite awhile.)

Bottle caps hit hard on the 7.5 frequency and quarters love the 2.5. Problem solved:bouncy:
