V3i Learning Curve

OK I have been detecting many years with many different detectors even a couple Whites in the past. I have to say I was a little intimidated by the V3i after reading the Manuals. I decided to copy the Coins program with the Polar Plot in the Analyyze mode then make changes from there. I got in the Expert Menu made the copy but when I tried to use the program it seemed to be stuck in Pin Point mode. Never figured out how to get it out.

I then changed back to factory Coins program and decided to hunt a while. Found a really neat Button but decided that there was too great a range on Coins. I wanted to Discriminate a little tighter. I had a time trying to get back into that Menu that just had the 6 selections or simple menu. finally figured out that I needed to disable the Expert Menu which brought back the simple menu.

Tightened the Discrimination by using a Zinc penny as well as a Nickle. I left a little wiggle room in each.

By this time it was time to eat Supper (Dinner to Yall up North).

Went back out and hunted an old House built in the 40s that is doomed for destruction soon. Only had about 45 minutes day light but had no trouble finding targets.

Pin Pointing with the Double D Coil is much different than I am used too. In fact I rarely use any Pin Point Mode at all but I soon picked it up fairly good.

Dug the below Coins as well as the Button nothing over 4 inches but the Detector hit hard on them. I really did not find the sizing feature very useful. Most of the Pennies were real pennies from the 70s and 80s but I did not cover any ground at all.

I then realized that I was not getting any Tone ID. Popped up the Menu and easily found the Tone ID. Changed it to allow tones then the Owner of the Property walked up so I had to do a little Policticing. Maybe try it out tommorow afternoon.

Went out again today and I liked the detector better with the ones turned on Found a small Silver Ring, Large Silver Pendant, and a bunch of Clad.

Anybody know if there is a Negative of any kind using the Tones?

Also learned that using the Spectrograph you can tell if a Coin is on edge.

Thinking that hunting in all this trash I may need a smaller Coil than stock. I can usually find good targets but it is hard pin pointing when there is so much trash in the area. Dug a couple pennies and found two nails in the hole. I really had trouble finding a real small Copper Nut off a Switch that was apparently on edge. This Detector will really pick up small objects. Any suggestions?

Howdy daddyflea--

I hunt a lot of trashy sights too. I usually use the 4X6 coil but if it is a cleaner lot I'll go with the 6X10 coil. VCO turned on will help with your pinpointing. I would also suggest that you give Corrolate a try and experiment with Bottle Cap Reject settings.

Good job on that Great Seal Button! Best of luck and...

OK I will try VCO not sure what that is exactly though.

Daddyflea, VCO = Voltage Control Oscillator. You can find that feature in the Audio section. In pinpoint mode (trigger squeezed and held), It increases the volume/pitch as your coil gets closer to metal. At it's highest volume and pitch, your coil should be directly centered over your target. Best of luck and...

Thanks I did change something in PIN point last night. It seemed to make the Pin Point work in Non Motion which should help a lot. There were only two options under that section. I went hunting yesterday and found a lot but had trouble pin pointing due to the large coil and a lot of targets. I found I was more accurate without using the actual Pin Point Feature. This Detector is awesome. I really feel that I am not leaving anything behind once I cover an area.

Pinpoint is always non motion all metal.

You are doing fine with the new machine.

By the way, we call it "Supper" where I'am from.

Ok got in a little Hunting today. Found about $3 bucks clad. This made my day,. I attached a picture of a 1944D wheat penny I found. I also found a small gold charm. Penny is in bad shape and I swear I did not whack it. The Gold charm was an honest 4" down in the ground and it rang up 19 VDI. I could not believe I found this small object this deep.

What I learned today was the Bottle Cap reject is not for me. Causes my Nickel signals to break up and just seems to make Nickels real shallow. Turned it off.

Found the VCO on Pin Point and enabled it. Looking at the ground and listening to the detector makes Pin Pointing much easier, than looking at the screen. Blind Squirel found his acorn.

You don't go out with a V3i and weak batteries. Mine died earlier than I expected and I did recharge my battery pack the night before but I ran off and left it at home.

Liking the V3i

Decided I really need a smaller Coil for my Trashy areas ordered a SEF 8X6 today from Kellyco.

Still hunting the old House. Got a good signal 78 but it bounced. Had trouble Pin Pointing. Noticed that it indicated Iron but I dug it anyway. Had trouble finding it and noticed that as I slid my Coil it changed from Iron to Silver. Finally located an old Spring from a Mouse Trap. Filled in my hole got up to leave and checked it again. Signal went to 83. In the Hole again to find a Quarter. I will not call names but some Detectors when a good target and a poor target are both under the Coil will average. Looks like the V3i may do this as well. These two targets were very close, in fact in the same 3" inch hole.

I really need that smaller Coil for this House.

Today I learned that you must be careful when Ground Balancing the V3i. If you do not hit the button and the Trigger at the exact same time, you will not be in Ground balance Mode. I noticed that a good Ground Balance even in my good ground made a heck of a diffference. I am hunting in thick St Augustine grass and finding targets an honest 4 to 5 inches in the ground. This means my Coil is most likely 7 inches above the actual dirt finding these targets.

V3i found another small piece of Junk Jewlry and I can tell you the V3i really goes deep on this Jewlry. Picking up really small pieces. I dig every repeating signal from 14 to 20.

I did not really learn this from the V3i but my best clue to Gold and Jewlry is a good steady VDI number regardless of what it is.

Today I learned that the Serial number that pops up in the Menu Screen is not the Serial Number accepted by the Factory. I tried to type in that number for my Registration and it was not accepted. The correct number is in the Battery Box.

By the way when calling Whites I detected a real attitude from the people that answered the phone and I really liked it. Not my first Whites Detector but my first time calling them and it was very positive.

OK still hunting the Old House every day after work. Today I found this Pin. It rang up as iron and showed to be larger than Coins but I was curious so I dug it any way.

Funny how the unusual Junk is sometimes exactly the reason we participate in this Hobby.

The old House was just too muddy so I moved to the School where I have hunted many times.

Learned that my Tesoro Deleon was really doing a good job. I found no targets deeper than I found with the Deleon. If you bought a used Deleon from Backwoods Detectors that I used to own you got one of those unusually good machines that I should have held on to.

I found several Nickels which is no surprise. My V3i makes it easy to spot the Nickels which most of the time ring up 19 VDI. I also learned that I was running my V3i at about half speed using Factory settings. I increased the Sensitivity dramatically and turned on the TX boost with no ill efects in that ground.

Still waiting on SEF Coil. I also learned from Kellyco that if you ship to a PO box it triggers a Fraud alarm which I was told delayed my shipment about 4 days. Said a few ugly words, but no one else seemed to have a 8X6 SEF.

In most cases boost really isn't needed except when trying to work with EMI.

This post is all over the place. Time to start a new one.
