V3i in P/P ????

Dos anybodys V3i in Pin Point give the three freqencies 2.5 / 7.5 / 22.5 with no sound and wen i G/B the sound comes in???? Thanks, Mickfin

If your machine is in need of ground balance, you might not pick up the target in pp. I don't know the technical reason, but I know that if you get a good signal in discriminate (motion) (ac) mode, then can't seem to pick it up when you try to pinpoint, a re-groundbalance will usually cure the problem. I also noticed that there is a VDI shift quite often from discriminate to pinpoint or analyze - I have to believe ground balance may have something to do with this, too. Gil

Gil dos that mean the GB is not working on my V3i ??? I called Whites N thay sead thay would Look in to it, Thay dident know why eather, Mickfin

Not necessarily, Mic. I read one time that if you couldn't pick up a target in PP but it showed up just fine in discriminate, your machine could be out of ground balance. I've had that happen on occasion with my XLT and didn't know what was wrong with me or the machine. The next time it did happen, I remembered to manually ground balance, and lo and behold, the target popped right up in PP.

I assume you are using auto tracking for ground balance, and of course your machine is trying to adjust to keep itself in ground balance with whatever soil conditions are currently under the coil. But it doesn't jump immediately every time the return signal changes - if it did you would never hear a target. Remember, ground balance is setting the machine to ignore the signal returned from the ground mineralization without a target there. But since the machine is set to adjust GRADUALLY to changing soil conditions, it is almost always A LITTLE out of balance. If the soil change is sudden (like when moving from dry dirt to wet dirt), it may take the detector some time to rebalance. Meanwhile, you are going to be out of ground balance. I think the best idea here (everyone correct me if I'm wrong) is to pay attention to the soil conditions and manually ground balance whenever you notice a substantial change.

I don't understand why ground balance is so critical in DC (pinpoint) mode, but it is. So, if you can't pick up your target in PP after hearing a good repeatable target in discriminate, just turn around, find a spot without a target, and ground balance. Bet'cha you'll pick up your target then. The only other reason I can think of is that either your DC gain is too low or you do, in fact, have a problem with the DC amp or A/D converter. But if it works some times, and this PP problem is only occasional, try a manual ground balance to see if it solves the problem...

Thanks Gil 4R the GB tip but i do GB to get out of the Prodlem, My Question is my V3i is in auto Track it Keeps the ground Balanced so whay dos it need GB ????
Thank You Mickfin,

This is just a guess but like Gilford is saying, the ground, especially where you are Mick, might be changing faster than the Auto GB can change. There is an adjustment to make that allows it to adjust in larger units, but I can't think of it right off hand. Rob would know though or it can be looked up in the manual.

The speed changes how long it will take to get to the new ground level. If you have slowly changing ground, setting your track speed slower would keep it more stable. If you have ground that's changing all over the place, set it up for a faster speed. Go into pinpoint and don't hear much audio change), then it's probably just fine. If you are hearing too much audio change you probably need to adjust your speed. Tracking does not use the filters so setting them will not affect how it tracks. It is triggered off of changes in the ground. Yes, in difficult ground it is good to lock the track to your manually balanced setting. Everything to which the V3 responds (with sufficient strength), generates a VDI number. The ground mineralization is no exception. When the V3 is ground-balanced properly, the V3 sniffs out the grounds VDI number and sets the circuitry to lose sensitivity to targets with that VDI number. All we have control of is how fast or slow it takes to get to that balance point.
