I don't use my v3i very often leaning more towards my etracs. I have made some good finds with my v3i. I just don't have the confidence in the v3i over my other detectors. The ole ground balancy thing has always concerned me when using the v3i and it seems other users too have had questions or concerns about the ground balancing on the v3i. I think after my experience tonight, I can put the ground balancing issue to rest as far as I'm concerned. Just for kicks tonight I ground balanced my v3i over a coin, over some iron and pull tabs. I had my tracking speed set to 20. I ground balanced over the coin. Then I proceeded to sweep the coil over clean ground. I noticed the tracking arrows in only about 3-6 short coil sweeps go left, right, left. So I then raised the coil pulled the pinpoint button and lowered over clean ground and not peep of sound or static. I did the same thing over the other two items I mentioned above and achieved the same results. It seems the machine ground balances real fast and is not an issue. Now I've read some like to lock their tracking when searching all the time and maybe rebalancing every 15 minutes and some folks like to lock their tracking when hunting in trash. I can understand the hunting in trash but I don't understand why you would want it locked all the time and maybe rebalancing every 15 minutes or so. Does the machine's tracking drift in auto?? And when hunting in trash with track inhibit enabled, doesn't this almost lock your tracking since the v3i is not supposed to track to a target when inhibit tracking is enabled?? I need to get out more with the V3i and build more confidence.
