I tried it in both the dry sand and in the surf and wet sand using a V-rated 950 coil. It worked very well in the dry sand but was a little jumpy in and out of the water. I was using a modified salt program. I could run the disc sens in the 80s and the RX gain a little higher than I usually can. It was easy enough to GB but the weight/balance is just a little too much for me and my old back. When I can use it on grass it is much better. I haven't found much, there is new sand on the beach evidenced by a 2' drop off at the high tide line. I mostly hunted along there, where the water has washed away the sand and up in the dry sand where people sit and play. It has been too rough to risk much in the surf and I think for this trip and for the beach in general I am finished with the V3, it is just too heavy for me if I have to keep the coil lifted or deal with the uneven sand from footsteps. I think the V3 probably isn't the best choice for senior citizens or for anyone with back problems, especially upper back problems... for younger and stronger hunters i'd see no problem. That is only my opinion though and I still like the V3 and will upgrade to the i soon...
So I switched to my old beach buddy the SovereignGT, chestmounted with a binocular harness (Cabela's Pro Binocular harness) and everything is right with the world. I have no problem swinging it with the 10" Tornado coil and it is more stable in and out of the water than the V3 is... next year I am going to have an Excalibur.
I also have my F75 LTD with me and will be trying it probably starting Monday... but it is hard to not just use the GT because it is such an awesome beach machine.
Now if only square tabs and Bud Light caps were worth good money... i'd be in high cotton!
