V- Nickles

Have been hunting for at least 15 yrs. and have found silver dollar, barbara quarters, barbara dimes, buffalo nickles. The one that eludes me is the V- Nickle. My Explorer reads 6 on the digital screen for a practice V- Nickle as well as all nickles. The smart find screen reads the same also. Nickles read a 6 on the screen even in the ground, sometimes a 5. Does anyone have a suggestion. Thought that they may read different in the ground or show up different on the smart find screen.
Thanks.

You're just not lucky in V nicks, George. I am new to detecting this year, but go nearly daily. I have 1 1903 V nickel at 5 inches. Well worn and sounded solid but like any nickel. Judging by wear maybe dropped around 1950. I wish I had your silver, though. I have 6 silver Roosevelts, 7 Mercury, 1 Barber dime, 1 war nickel, and 1 Barber quarter. And that's it for my silver coins. Never a WAshington silver quarter and I have dug over 300 clad ones! So it goes. Also, never any pure 19th century only coins, but half a dozen from before 1900.

I have found 2 v's and one read 5 and the other read 6. I use to think all nickels read 5 but I was wrong. My first exposer to this is when I found my first buffalo at 6, so now I will dig all 5, and 6's but expect a few beaver tails. Good luck and I just think all you have to do is put that coil over one and dig it.

I like to konw if you can help me. I have a nickle with a buffalo and indian head, it may have some value?

If it is a 1936 with a 3 legged buffalo it might be worth a few bucks.

I've only found one and it reads 10-06. If you're in an area that is producing old coins, dig all 10-06 readings because that's where you'll find the V nickels. You'll be digging more trash digging the 10-05 and 10-06 numbers than nickels but if you want to find nickels you'll have to dig all 10-5 &10-6 numbers.
