V nickel

Rob (IL)

New member
I hunted a side walk strip in front of the old high school. I got this 1902 V nickel. It started raining so I had to leave.

The school was built in 1909. Here is a picture. Interestingly the school must be hunted a lot but they must use a high discrimination setting. I've got 45 nickels out of half of the front lawn so far. I've never found a silver coin, and only one other v nickel (1907). Rob

...cherry picking was the thing, back in the day. No one cared to find anything as mundane as cents or nickles!
Some folks still cherrypick, I might add. But since the easy stuff is gone, we use it as part of an overall strategy and content ourselves with lower conductivity items, too.

Thats's why I said it has been hit hard, because I have never found a silver coin there. I've hunted the school for two years. Rob

Rob, if you find an extraordinary amount of nickles, it is a spot that is hunted hard. Man that is one good looking nickle. They don't look like that here in the clay soil. I know many of the local Explorer experts don't program nickles. I have a new method of hunting and it includes nickles. The old silver is all but gone in my neck of the woods, but like I said these guys leave nickles and in most cases gold. I dig all nickle signals and I have been finding some gold in the process. I would be fibbing if I said I didn't dig any pull tabs and I do. I dug 53 coins yesterday and 24 were nickles. That park is definitely cherry picked. Nice find and keep digging them nickle signals. R.L.

Nice V-Nickel Rob. You'd be surprised of the "cherry picking" that goes on around most areas. With you finding so many nickels, you could come across a nice ring also one of these days. Great detecting!

Love those V's.
