I have been using my XS for three days straight and every now and then I find coins, until today I hadn't noticed my thresh hold hum disappeared and only comes back when I stop my swing and pause for a sec.I was under some bleachers at an old high school when I noticed two different times I went over pennies and it didn't sound off.
I then laid down my nickel dime penny zinc one too pull tab and the XS would not sound off unless I went super slow.I then turned the XS off and tired again and it worked for like a few minutes then started the same problem again.I switched coils and tried againd started off fine but did it again.I have no idea whats going on I used the factorry reset and it still does it,anyone have this problem.I even noticed that the CROSS HAIR TARGET ID locks up in one spot but the tones are changing from low to high and it is not adjusted unless I stop and let it takes a few seconds to adjust itself.I have done everything right is there a problem with the unit I just bought this a month ago and have use it very little until the last three days I have about 4 hours of real use on it...It didn't do this when I first got it.

Hey Rick,
Don't think anything is wrong with you machine. Sounds like classic too high of sensitivity in trash. The cross hairs will not move until the threshold comes back and the threshold will not come back if it is seeing a target. When you stop swinging then there is no more targets appearing under the coil so it has a chance to get the threshold back. In high trash you may need to go super slow to distinguish targets. You are not seeing the coins because there is some other target under the coil that is masking the coin out. Also guessing that you are using auto sensitivity if it works at first then gets worse.
Try you machine again in an area that you know is less trashy. You should be able to see the coins there and get a threshold
In trash set your sensitivity in manual and low - 10 or so. Also use the smallest coil you have. And go reeeaaallll slow.
Hope this helps

Read my post below. Lower your sens down. I had the same problem with auto sens. It would work for about 1 min then it would go nuts. Maybe our machines are messed up, I will find out tomorrow as I am going out with some other XS users. But even if our machines are bad, which I don't think they are, just lower that sens down to 10 or 15 manual and I bet you see your problems get better. I feel pretty good right now, I am finding stuff pretty well, and just think if I can do this with a hosed machine, just think what I can do with a good one. I spent at least 5 months fighting with the XS and all I really had to do was go to manual sens, lower the sens, and go slow. Out pops the silver.

And give it another try,I was on auto and manual but at 16 the half way mark on sensitivity.I thought the auto no matter what decreased if needed.I also tried the noise cancellation several times.I have a friend with an XS I am going to be hunting with soon and he has had his for about 7 months so I know he can help me out some.I'will keep you posted.

Rick;
Chris has ID'd the problem correctly.
You were in a high trash area and the machine was constantly nulling (ignoring a signal that is in the reject area of the discrimination). Were the bleachers metal? This can be a real problem with just too much metal around to ever get the threshold back. Without the treshold the cursor will not move.
If you have a smaller coil it will help because there will be fewer targets under the coil. Go very very slowly to allow for target separation and return of the threshold.
Good luck and happy hunting. Glad to see you out hunting. If you are at a school, try by the swings in a line 4-10 feet parallel to the swing sets. This is where I'm finding massive amounts of coins.
You will learn the explorer faster if you can find an area with less trash first. Then go back to the high trash areas. They are just too confusing to you and the machine at first.
Post some finds for us. I'm excited to see what you are going to be finding.

Hey Rick,
Keep at it. A few more hints. In Auto sensitivity can go UP or DOWN from preset level. To prove it to yourself set the sensitivity at 1 and switch between Auto and manual. You'll be able to get a target at a much greater distance in Auto. Most of the time in trash the explorer will detune(less sensitivity) in automatic, but I have seen times where it was more unstable in auto than in manual at the same setting. Not exactly sure what is going on.
And Ronin had good point above. Start in less trashy areas. The explorer can drive you nuts at first. Even after using it for quite some time trashy areas are still challenging.
Another thing I would recommend is to turn off all discrimination at times and listen to all the junk signals. Try digging everything at first and see how good you are at interpreting what the explorer is telling you. The different tones for different junk tells you alot more than just having the threshold blank out. Eventually you will do most of the discrimination with your BEDU(between ears discrimination unit). Most people end up hunting with very little discrimination, mainly because of the situation you describe, constant nulling in trash will mask out good signals. But if you are just starting out this can be a bit too much, running the standard coin program isn't too bad of a place to start.

HI
i AM HAVING THE SAME SORT OF PROBLEMS RICK AND I HAVE HAD MY XS FOR A YEAR .5 10 20 YOU CAN PLACE COIN ON GROUND AND GET NO SIGNAL JUST THESHOLD DIES SAME THING IN FACTORY PRESET.BEING SENT TO MINELAB NECT WEEK.CANNOTSTOP JUST YET IN THE MIDDLE OF A BIG HIT 1/2 C 1/2 D AND THEY MIGHT CLOSE IT OFF ANYDAY.ALSO CANNOT GET INTO ADVANCED AS MENU BUTTON WONT WORK.GOOD HUNTING
