USPS Money Orders

I recently sold a gentleman a couple of collectable items that I have had for a number of years. He sent me a couple of large denomination USPS Money Orders. Today I decided to go cash the money orders and mail the gentleman his merchandise. I quickly discovered that the post office does not maintain any cash on hand from one day to the next. So I found it very difficult to cash the money orders as none of the offices had enough cash in todays receipts.

I finally found one office that had sufficient cash to take care of one of the money orders and late this evening I found another that could cash the small of the two.

Real hassle to have to drive all over the area looking for a post office with enough cash to take care of a money order that was purchased at a post office.

Lousy way to run a business but we know from the red ink that the P O isn't run very efficiently.

You usually treat them as a check and cash or deposit them at the bank.

I usually just deposit them at my bank

Folks at the Post Office (3 different ones) said that only the Post Office could handle USPS Money Orders. Live and learn. Thanks for the info. I will know better next time.

Had that problem many times and now just stop by my bank and deposit them, takes a couple days to clear but it sure beats running all over the place.

I deposited one two weeks ago.. easiest way to go

Before you deposit a USPS money order, have the P.O. check it to make sure its real. It doesnt happen often, and if you trust the person buying your stuff there is no need. But, like many fake items these days,ie: checks,m.o.'s etc, you dont want the bank calling you 3 days later to tell you it was no good. JMO

Every Post Office I went to checked the Money Orders and verified that they were real. I made sure that they were before I shipped the gentleman his mdse. I didn't want to wind up without my collectables or the money. The old saying of Trust but verify still hold true and probably more today than in the past.

I've never tried to cash a money order at the post office! they are no different then any other money order. I just go through the bank drive through and sign the back and they give me back the cash. I don't even deposit them, just cash them.

I heard high value...

If they were that high in value a bank will put a hold on it for a few days to clear....

Lower value MO's will cash and mid range depends on your account balance....
