USPS money order?

WV62

Well-known member
Well I got to ask, why most of the post for sale will say they will except USPS money order for payment?

Now I am not buying anything right now, but I can go to my branch bank and get a free money order. Some may say I can't get them free at the bank, the account I have offered that and I took it and I have used it. If I go to the post office to buy a money order it will cost something. Why wouldn't anybody except a bank money order?

I know on some of my listings I just say money order.

I guess people are faking bank money orders as well and the "instant verification" is not always accurate when you cash them at another bank , so if you get burned your account gets debited making you a two time loser if you send the item off after cashing. Seems like in today's techy age that wouldn't be very much of a risk but evidently it must happen. USPS can verify the funds instantly since it's all "in house" and you can cash out with certainty. Only caveat is that the PO tellers have to have enough cash in their drawers at the time of cashing , so it's possible you might have to go back if you hit them at the wrong time.

So it sounds like my bank money orders are about the same as sending a check, they still have to clear their bank before it is safe to ship.

Thanks,

Postal MO are insured and assured instant cash .
Other MO maybe cheaper but they are treated just like a check and have to clear the account.
I always ask for Postal MO whenever selling and there is never a problem.

You don't have to cash them at the PO either , your bank will except them or anywhere your a known to cash a check .
Sorry for two post should have read it all ;-)

My Nephew took a PO money order and the bank even cashed it. A week later the bank came back and said the money order was no good and tried to get him to pay it back. He told them where to go and said they said it was good when he cashed it so it was their problem. They never asked again, but it does show a PO money order is not fool proof.

Well at least I can stop wondering why everybody is so picky with their MO request. LOL

I just had to know,

Thanks guys,

USPS - neither rain nor shine nor the dead of night.

Just use the excellent system which our forefathers established for safe movement of documents - and now funds.

Sometimes "free enterprise" means "fleeced enterprise"..

It seems to be possible to fake anything these days , that's why you take it to the USPS , they will verify it's authenticity and cash it then. There is a PO in nearly every neighborhood while the banks ability to talk to one another seems to be very limited. That's why the scam of sending someone a check for more than the purchase dupes so many people , as the banks will actually cash the bogus checks as long as you have an account with them. I had a guy send me a check through UPS once from the Bank of NY and you couldn't tell it wasn't authentic , very good fake. If it hadn't been for $1500 on a $250 item it might have been tempting too cash it.

Yes I have heard of fake postal money orders, so when you receive a postal money order you just have to check with the post office to see if it is OK or not as they can punch it up and see if the serial numbers are correct and will show that it has been purchased . Then if they cant cash it than banks can as you know it is real.
Another way, but cost more is a Cashier check and these are guarantied to be the same as cash as the bank makes them when you pay with cash and the persons name is put on the check who gets it.

I have had to use them a few times when dealing with some bigger items.

That is why I prefer Paypal. Although I have had a few rough transactions, the end results, for the most part, was good. If you pay for goods through Paypal and get a brick in a box Paypal will reimburse your funds and go after the other guy themselves.

Forgot the convenience of PayPal...... 3 clicks of the mouse and your item is on the way....... Paying with a USPS M/O..... ... 1/2 hour wait in the post office line......... the drive to the post office...........oh forgot the stamp........ who's got a envelope ? ........ ill take the 3 clicks of the mouse any-day.

Many of us in the UK use Paypal.

The system works fine and without worry and agro..

Happy Hunting.

I faced this when I purchased an Etrac guy had no paypal I sent
A certified postal money order they have to go to post offfice to cash and verifiy
Address and show id.
And the feds get involved if any funny business.

With Paypal, I think you only have protection with the fee service, not the gift / friends / family.

Same works on the other end assuming their as honest as you are.. Sometimes bank checks takes 10 days to clear,,,,, and your responsible for payback if bank honored the phony check.. so USPS is one of the safest but not fool proof either. Know who your dealing with.. Be safe not sorry.

If you pay the 3% and someone send you a junk detector, you get all your money back even shipping if you pay it. I always use paypal if I can. If you pay for something and don't get it you will get your money back. I don't mind paying for the fee, just like insurance., you got to pay for that to.
