Using the tejon today I learned something but now i'm more confused than ever...

I have hunted the yard at our office for months, ever since we bought it last spring. I've hunted it with a GT, T2, and a Tejon. Well, we are going to pave a part of the front yard for more parking in a few weeks so I figured i'd get out there and dig everything foil and above with the Tejon. I figured i'd use the Tejon because it will hit everything and give good depth. I immediately started digging pennies and I haven't done but a small part of it so far. One was a wheatie too.

The problem is that I have been all over this area digging all the decent sounding signals. The signals I was getting today with the Tejon were broken at the foil setting but I dug them anyway since we will be paving. I was surprised that these were coins. Four to five inches deep and broken tones on foil....

I am second guessing right now. Why would I get broken signals on pennies with disc one set at foil? Five pennies in about a 10x10 foot area... would small iron in the ground in the spot do this?

I am going to go out there with some markers and check some of these signals with all three of my machines before digging. This all make's me think I have been leaving good targets in the ground when relying on the tone ID of my machines...

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Julien

Did you try going over the area that you found those coins at, with All Metal mode? Maybe you are getting some matrix interference, i.e. iron, clinkers, or something like that. I have a place that I like to use my main detector at, that does something like what you described. I found a dime that sounded really choppy. I dug it anyway, and of course, as I said, it was a dime. When I turned on all-metal, there were a lot of iron hits. So, the detector was trying to disc out the iron, yet still pick out the dime. You might "see" a lot of background popping, chattering or something that may explain the broken tones that you are getting now. Just a thought.

...hit my thoughts, too. I suspect masking if some sort. DO try the ALL METAL search - youll probably be surprised at the results. I dont suggest you did everything that signals. But just give it a try on the places youve already hunted for a few minutes.
Youll soon get an appreciation for the effects of masking.
