Using rechargable batteries in an alkaline battery pod

John(Tx)

New member
Just wondering if any of you guys use rechargable batteries in an excal alkaline battery pod and if you can charge the batteries while in the battery pod? Thanks, HH John

John, if your able to get 1.5v rechargeable batteries then its ok but most are 1.2v which totals 9.6v not the 12.0v from 8 alkaline.

I can use freshly charged Sanyo Eneloop batteries in my Sovereign ( Same basic machine ) , and get it to work ....Not sure how long they will work though ...... I keep a fresh set with me on every hunt in case I need a backup ....I charged a set and let them sit for a month or so , and they were not able to perform in my Sovereign ...It has to be a FRESH charge !!.....Jim

Most often using rechargeables provides a lower operating voltage.
On some forums at different times I have heard of some other ideas....
Some guys were throwing away batteries long before their detector gave the low battery warning because they were afraid of losing 'power' and 'depth'.
At other times, guys were patching extra batteries running in parallel to extend hunting time before the batteries got 'too low'. Again, some times long before the batteries really needed replacing.
Then there were guys patching in extra batteries in series to increase 'power and depth'.

Did any of this stuff really make a rat's butt difference? Who knows....but it provides some early morning humor as to how some lines of thought can run in completely different directions.

I posted an answer to your question just now but in the other thread where I've been trying to keep all battery and charger info as a point of reference for people. I get sick of answering the same question in PMs all the time...

My local Interstate Battery store, replaced my old Minelab Waterproof battery pack, which was returned from Minelab when they ( Minelab ) installed the New WaterProof Battery pack in my Excalibur. Interstate Battery put about 1000mh batteries in the pod. I now leave them in the non -waterproof container. With the higher mh batteries I let them charge for about 10 -12 hours. They also rebuilt 2 Minelab X P Pro Battery Pods with the 1000 mh rechargeable batteries. These new Battery Pods keep on Ticking like Energizers, The rebuilt all 3 for around $ 65.00 with a 20 % discount coupon available for just sigining up at the Store.. goldnugget-Charlotte,North Carolina

Yes,

I do and many others do too..

I do it a tad bit different than others..

I buy the Onlybattery pack batteries... ad them to the POD.. ad a Desicant pouch... Then I use an adheshive Heat Shrink 3-1 around the Pod..

and it's better then the Standard Rechargables..

Its a myth that rechargable AA/AAA only produce 1.2v, test one and see, at 1.2v they are half descharged
