Using Quickmask

Sid in NC

Member
When I hunt and get a 12.45 or 12.46 with a good high tone, then switch to quickmask and now it reads 35.46 or so. I usually will pass it by as being iron. I don't get the 12.46 any more in quickmask. I know that some of you hunt by tone only but I use the tone and the meter, I guess the question is, should I be digging all the so called good high tones. What's the general feeling about this?

I also look to see where the cursor now ends up after switching to quick mask. If it's in the bottom right corner and don't come up out of there while sweeping the target it's iron.

If it's in say middle and upper portions of that right hand side then it may be a good target rusted or next to iron trying to drag it down into the right corner. Dig it and see. Most times it don't lie and turns out to be a good target in my experience with my Etrac. If it's in the lower 1/3 of the right hand corner I have found it to be bad targets.

Thanks for the response, I will keep this in mind when checking in future.

I assume you're talking about a 1 way hit. Usually iron when in that scenerio. Also listen to the length of the tone when in QM both ways. Usually with a nail or something of the like the tone will sure be a lot longer than a coin hit.

Also listen to the threshold. If it disappears with the curser in the bottom right that is two signs it is iron.

Is the 12-45 a one way hit or two ways? If it is a two way hit, why even bother checking it in quickmask? If it hits one way and you turn 90 degrees, and you get nothing keep walking, 99% of the time it is iron.

If the FE is 35 then it's almost always been iron for me. But don't disregard FE's of around 25-26 as I have found many coins with those numbers.

if its hittin 12-45/46 im digging period. jumping to quick mask turns your discrimination off. its in the manual.

Some of those higher fe numbers might be shield,or v nickles.I get 28-11, 23-10 ,26-13 on these and they are usually 7-9" down with a soft tone. Ialways dig these off the wall numbers and its paid off.
