Using pinpoint with Sunray probe

Anyone else besides me use pinpoint on the Explorer while using a Sunray probe? I found this helpful while digging deep targets. I use this method also to avoid damaging a target since putting the Explorer into pinpoint while using the probe, I can get an idea how close to the target I am getting and I will then pull out my plastic scoop to avoid any costly scratches. I never knew about using pinpoint with the Sunray until I read it somewhere else here last year. Just wanted to pass this on to others that might find this method helpful.

Note- I do use the standard mode to pinpoint with the Sunray right up until I feel I'm getting very close to the target or have problems locating it within the plug. :)

I've used pinpoint mode with the probe before. Not something I normally do though, having to take the unit in and out of pinpoint mode while kneeling on the ground is just one extra step. (and if you put it in pinpoint mode before switching to the probe, the explorer goes nuts when you do)
I usually just fish around with it in regular detect mode. Since I use all metal mode and can hear all the iron, it lets me tell different targets in the same hole apart. A good target can also sound a bit like iron or a low conductor when you're just barely in range of it with the probe, though.

Generally the only time I still use the pinpoint on the probe is if a target's really giving me a hard time locating it for some reason.

I have always used the probe in pinpoint, it also gives extra depth. In Australia our modern coins are usually a lot shallower than yours, and i can locate them with the probe, spot on, when it is in pinpoint, the only way to fly

I use the probe just as a regular coil. When I get an item on the big coil and pinpoint, then I use the probe (small coil) in the detect mode and to really zoom in I use pinpoint. I can tell how far down to stick my trowel in the ground, by the sound of the probe in pinpoint mode. For targets that are deeper I pinpoint with my SE and check with my probe, if I get nothing, then I dig down three inches and check with my probe. It has saved a lot of coins and items, no scratches. Plus it saves me a lot of time in recovery the item

I use pinpoint... the down side is if you are using high disc. The probe seems to be spot on with TID... so once in the hole if its iron your target disappears. For new people im sure thats frustrating... not to mention that HIGH burst of noise you get switching off pinpoint BEFORE you flip back to the large coil. Its great for shallow targets. Not sure how much more battery life is used in pinpoint if used all the time.

Hi WL, I find it very difficult to do a fine pinpoint with the X-1 as it reads coins to the sides as well as in front of it. Putting the probe in pinpoint mode works well, but you need to detune the probe just like the coil. And then if you put the X-1 on the ground to dig it can make a horrible noise in your ears. I also find it difficult to reach for that pinpoint button on the console. With the E-Trac they could have designed a integrated probe with the buttons on the probe and it's a shame they didn't. I frequently reach for my VibraProbe to do a final pinpoint of the target in the dirt pile rather than using my X-1 as it's much faster. I use the X-1 to find the general direction in the hole (or plug) of the target.

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE THE SUNRAY X-1, but using the VibraProbe in conjunction with it is faster. For me recovery speed is important.

Don't feel bad - I've been using the probe for 9 years now an I still leave it on sometimes while detecting and walk around for 10 minutes like an idiot. I've complained about the employment of that darned toggle switch, but have been branded an "ingrate, a trouble maker, and an all around bad egg -- indeed the antichrist!"

Other than that I LOVE MY X-1! Like my American Express card -- I never leave home without it!

Is that an X-1 in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?!?! :yikes:

Yep! Been there and still do it!

I don't do it as often as I used to and usually happens after talking to a passer-by. I then start to wonder why the ground is so quiet. Finally figure it out and have to go back and re-detect the area again. :rage:

Before my Whites probe kicked the bucket, I used to use it as a final pinpointer like you do with the Vibraprobe. Using the X-1 in pinpoint does take some practice as you stated since you have to detune it prior to actually pinpointing. Sometimes, it takes me a few trys to properly do it. Not quick, but it get's the job done.

Might have to check out the Vibraprobe!

Thats something i liked about the whites.... the pinpoint trigger. Eric you talk about the switch... id like to see the box mounted on top of the upper rod. I tend to carry the detector where the box is its more natural for me. Ive thought about modifying the rod and flipping it over... just cant bring myself to do it.

Weasel,I did use another pinpointer with the X-1 probe.I find this inline probe very difficult to use especially after using the S-1 with the Sovereign. Now to save weight and time I just use a Pistol Probe in conjunction with a Bullseye ll.The down side there can be cross talk with the Explorer and the PI probe.

Ron...I don't know if you leave the Pistol Probe on all the time, but I read where somebody turns on the probe(s) and then does a noise cancel and supposedly the brain in the SE then avoids the interference they create. Really! The SE doesn't know the differenence between EMI, power lines, or the probe. It just tries to avoid it. Jim
