using pinpoint mode to decide to dig or not

outdoors

New member
I think Bryce posted that you can use pinpoint to decide to dig or not to dig by the different numbers that pinpoint will show compared to the numbers that you see in search mode
is this a good way to use this method to dig or not to dig.... help with question Bryce

Never noticed the number till yesterday and then came home and read your post.On ex II sometimes i will swing over iffy target and in pinpoint mode and then take it out of pinpoint mode real quick and if signal go right in smart screen it is usually good left it is usually junk just depends to me how deep and were it stops on right in smart screen will have to look at numbers and see if this helps with that trick.

ohio fred --

I was part of that "using pinpoint mode" discussion with Bryce. I use that trick often -- works great on stuff that's not too deep. I will say this though -- the pinpoint mode will sometimes ID deep coins as trash (lots of numbers like 27 (fe) 31 (co), stuff like that). As long as the coins aren't too deep, though, it's a great tool...

Ive learned this over the years... if you spend to much time trying to determine what it is ... you are better off digging and moving on because at the end of the day you end up with more in your pouch. There are no certainties when it comes to deep targets. Iffy to me means dig. I trust what i hear and dont want to be talked out of digging a target by TID or jumping numbers. Reminds me of the slogan one of the major companies use...... know what you are digging before you dig. Dont get me wrong i dont dig everything but ive tried hard since they came out with screens ect to NOT let them talk me out of digging targets especially deep ones. Also ive found i can manipulate those digits or even make iron repeat.

because none of the other explorers ID while in the pinpoint mode.

Ending up with more "iffy" junk targets in the pouch is not what any of us are looking for...but possibly having an extra edge in determining whether or not those "iffy" targets are good targets...is a whole different ballgame that we are all interested in.

I never use numbers and always hunt in smart screen because the cursor movement and placement provides invaluable info that the numbers simply can't.

When you locate an iffy target by #1 SOUND...then #2 utilize cursor movement and flutter...the third and final step which makes my final decision on whether or not to dig is #3...ID all metal pinpoint on the SE.

If I switch to pinpoint mode on the SE and the cursor stays ANYWHERE to the right of where my iron mask is set at -22....I am DIGGING.

If that cursor moves anywhere in the black (left of where iron mask is set)...I WALK.

Is it foolproff?...NO,,,but is sure as heck narrows it down a lot...AND you do not have to take a chance on every target that sounds "iffy".

The key to successful hunting is not to end up with a pouch full of crap...although it has happened to me before:cool:.

The key is to find as many keeper targets as you can while eliminating as many "bad" digs as you can.

Sometimes iron in close proximity to your target will suck the pinpoint away or not allow for a proper ID in pinpoint.

In this case you leave it in normal hunt mode and try the minelab wiggle over the sweet spot of the sound you hear.

IF that sweet sound repeats from at least two different angles...I'll give it a shot since I can't utilize the ID'ing all metal poinpoint in iron at times.

so it's the smart screen that you use in pinpoint mode and not the numbers, got it... thanks Bryce
