Using Notch

gear box

New member
There hasn't been much talk about using notch. Does anybody use it? I think I see a distinct advantage in using it in a flip-top plagued area. What other good targets may notched out when notching out flip-tops? I used it the other day at a fair grounds and the GT wasn't going off every few inches. I felt I was able to concentrate better. Does this have an affect on the deeper weaker signal's that don't fall into the notched out area.?
Thanks Gary

Yeah but some guy's are coin hunters and don't give a hoot about jewelry. You would be dumb not to use a great feature like disc and notch. If you know what you are doing you can find more jewelry and coins using disc and notch than not.Dig all the trash out of the ground if you like,if you got all day!.

If you get to know your Sovereign you wont have to dig all the trash in 0 disc or 0 notch as it has tone ID that is probably the most accurate ID of any detector out there. You can swing the coil and hear all the tones it makes, but with experience most of these tones will not get you attention, but every once in a while it will and those are the ones you check out further. A coin is unmistakable tone and even the nickle will sound different then a pull tab as the nickle seems to have a tone all itself. A gold ring may read like a pull tab, but from experience you will see it has a smoother sound to it even though it reads the same number and the same tone.
Now with the notch or disc on it seem like you get more nulling and signals that seem to break up and take more time to check these out.
I used to use a lot of disc on my detectors and I did this with my Sovereign too back in 1996, but soon learned I could do better and hear more good targets with 0 or very little disc and no notch at all if I wanted to find deeper and good targets close to trash better.

Headphones are the Timberwolfs as they have the best volume for us that are hard of hearing. Meter is a Sun Ray DTI 2 or 3 , but any of the 180 meters will do for me. Now coils I find someone learning the Sovereign the 8 inch coinsearch is the best. I like my 10 inch Tornado coil on my Sovereign GT and have used the 8 inch Sun Ray and the 12 inch Sun Ray coils which are 2 great coils too. Tried others, but these are my favorite ones.

i shutter to think about all the Gold (coins n rings) i left in the ground back in the 60's because i disc out pull tabs.found lot's of Silver and Copper coins though.none of them paid for my detector like the Gold iv found.iv never dug a nail or bobbi pin with my Sovereign's and very few bottle caps, just the iffy sounding ones .must be the alloy in those blue BL beer caps.

have a question using notch on the beach. i know to get gold i cant notch out pulltabs but is it possible to notch out zinc pennies or will that make me miss other targets thanks in advance jim

Try to notch out them or disc them out and you will find out that it will not do it, or at least all the Sovereigns I have tried will not disc or notch them out even at max. I wouldnt anyway as there is some larger gold rings that will ID plus the IH pennies also will read the same as a zinc penny.

Gear box you can notch the type of pull tab out that you keep finding most and still be able to pick up small gold rings thru the low disc setting, you have to set it just right,it can not be moved once set.It will tune out the most common pull tab to that particular area you are in ,when you find one turn the notch just untill it is gone, then throw a nickel down and if it is set right it will still pick up the nickel.
