Using high mineral setting for demo,

Old California

New member
One of the weak areas some VLF suffer are not able to handle poor ground, that was the case with the Golden uMax in my area especially a demo or areas with even the slightest mineralztion.

Some demo's bring out the worst in ground, need a good vlf to handle the stirred soil yet have good sepration. Today, The Mojave sailed through with flying colors.

A recent store/restaurant from the 1950's was torn down, not that old but still a good place to test the Mojave. Today, heading back home from a TDI park hunt stopped by the city vacant lot. Within 40 minutes dug 19 coins one being a wheat penny.

Using high discrimination, yet allowing zinc pennies with high ground setting sailed through the demo with no issues. Amazing, coin after coin kept surfacing nothing old but one coin yet a thrill to see the Mojave cut through the trashy mess with ease.

Discrimination was just a little under zinc penny, about 80% upper pull tab area so incase there were Indian pennies or 1/2 dimes the Mojave would still get them.

The high ground setting has it strenghts, If you need it use it in areas like these because Demo's or some areas of farm land bring out the worst in soil.

Thanks for looking,
Paul

I got one coming and want to try it out on a few high trash areas and park settings too.I see it as an awesome tot lot unit as well.

How did the TDI do in that park hunt ? I am taking mine out with the 7.5 inch coil to a park that has a lot of aluminum trash but silver coins deep. I like how I can set it up for high conductors and pretty much not even hear aluminum or pull tabs.I am pretty amazed at how deep the 7.5 coil can go on silver if set up correctly. I know I will dig some deeper iron but shallow iron is pretty easy to eliminate (ie not dig) via tone and sizing using that smaller coil. That longer tone and low warble is definitely different that the sharp crisp smaller tone of a deep silver or copper coin.

I set mine up in high conductive mode with pulse delay around 17, GB at 7 and gain 3/4 and it works very well for the conditions I hunt in. I have an original (but not through hole) unit mounted on one of the Anderson carbon shafts....love that thing.

I know there is a TDI forum but technically it's a beep and dig unit ! HA !

Now back to the Mojave. Good to see those coins getting found and the high gb setting working as it's designed. My first hunt will probably be at a tot lot but I do want to try it out in the dry sand on some beaches here in NJ that have been giving up some old coins.

Mine should be here Wed/Thurs.

You will like it. I sure love mine its lightweight and a joy to use. It's pretty deep I dug a copper penny at 7 inches so it does get depth.

Thanks John,

You'll like the Mojave, it's an ok tot lot detector but it's strenghts are in trashy areas and it's depth is above normal with a detector having a 7" coil.

The TDI is a good coin getter with the right settings, and your settings are close to mine on GB with high conductive but i run my delay at 10uS. I've compared 17uS with 10uS on deep coits and can't see a difference, keep thinking about what Miner John said with his coils that he makes them to operate at 10uS. Somehow, that planted a seed in me feeling his coils are at it's best operating at 10uS? Could be wrong, but Im seeing great results running 10uS with both high or low conductive. Plus, pretty much run GB the same with both low or high conductive.

Past week, dug 8 wheat pennies with the TDI, all from a pounded park. No silver, but fun none the less. Your 7.5" coil is good, heard a lot of good reviews with that particular coil. I use the Miner John 6"x10" for gold jewelry hunting, or clad at parks and school grounds. 14" Miner John coil for deep park coins, stock 12" suffers from EMI were Miner John coils sail through with little or no EMI.

Enjoy the TDI and Mojave, two good detectors. Let us know how the Mojave does in your area, Im sure you'll like it.

Thanks again John,
Paul

Paul,

I was checking those coils out. Now you got me thinking about the 6x10 !

I use the 12 inch stock for beach hunting in the wet sand but there are a lot of places where it's littered with nails/small iron and I am digging holes every 2 feet. So I mostly use my PI's when the conditions are right...the TDI in the wet sand and my Infinium in the wet, suds and knee deep water ( I don't go out past my knees...been there done that and here on the NJ coast it's hairy most times. These last few Summers with beach replentishment projects, they buried jetties and ruined the natural contour of the beach and there are massive rip tides now where in the past there has never been).

Will be posting some pics and summary of the first couple hunts with the Mojave when I get it. Should be fun.

John
