Using full Disc

Do any of you guy's ever wonder if you're missing some good stuff by cranking up the disc. to max and maybe begin to doubt your ability find deep coin's because of this? Just curious cause I can't help but to think that if your machine isn't making a bunch of racket all the time a guy would be able to concentrate on the weaker and deeper sgnal's better and maybe at the end of the day your good find's may have improved.
Good hunting,Gary

Gearbox,I never hunt with the discriminate or notch on.I like to see the numbers and hear the tones. My theory using the discriminate could hurt with the climbing numbers on deep targets.HH Ron

I never use DISC where I hunt, which is the beach at Pismo Beach CA. That goes whether I'm in the surf up to my waist or walking the dry sand after a long weekend.....on both my Excals (15" WOT and 10" BBS) and my Sov-GT (15" WOT) I never turn up or on the DISC.
Like Ron, I too "like to see the numbers and hear the tones". I don't have to deal with the trash that some inland sites have as long as I stay out of the Dunes RV area which is nothing but Alum trash from untold numbers of camping fires and beer fests over the years. I hunt exclusively the non-vehicular traffic area of the beach with my ears tuned to hear the faintest deviation in sound and a double check on every null, maybe I'm all wet, but to me I want to hear it all and why I don't use any DISC.

Gravedigger how ya doing? I really don't have info from anywhere in particular.I have read various posts here and there where somone does this and they also turn down the sensitivity to a low setting. Some also have commented that they don't lose any depth either (at least not noticable anyway). I think this is also like the the silver only mode that has been written about. I'm curious because if the Sov. does'nt lose depth at full disc and you can still get a good signal from coin's,why not use it.
Good hunting,Gary

With full disc you will still get the new pennies along with clad and silver, but no nickles or gold. Those that know the Sovereign well and understand it will tell you there is a difference in depth with full disc. For most coins you will not see a difference, but those deeper and closer to trash is the ones we want and here is where you will see a difference. This is the same with sensitivity as some will tell you there is no difference in auto or manual, but there is quite a difference once you get to know your Sovereign. You can use the auto and max disc and do well, but for those that want the ones that others have missed that are deeper or closer to trash you need to run with the disc turned down to Min. go real slow and run manual sensitivity to get those that been missed for years by others. Like I say if you know your Sovereign well you will see a difference, if not you will not see a difference.

Thank's Rick, that makes a lot of sense to me. A question on sensitivity though. Is running your sensitivity down to the lowest position still better than putting it in auto?
Thanks Gary

My feeling is auto works good for those new to the Sovereigns as it makes learning the detector easier. Auto may work good for those that hunt in newer places where coins are not real deep or even use when you want to go over a area faster to get rid on the clad so you can hear the deeper targets while running in manual. I feel from what I have used auto that it seems like around the 2 o'clock position it seems about the same while lower auto seems to be better while higher than manual seems to work better. It is rare I run any lower than the 10-11 o'clock position and just adjust my sweep speed depending on the area and how many targets it sees.

Like others said above, I don't know of any detectorist that hunt that way on a regular basis due to the reasons you mention.

Good luck to you.

that's the way i hunted with the sovereign almost all the time. i got a lot of mercs that would only give a 136 signal but would still sound off at full disc. i did go back to some of the better spots and hunted for lower targets like nickles. i have been hunting with the t-2 and explorer xs. i haven't gbut 1 wheat that the sovereign missed with the t-2. i have done a little better with the explorer but i'm still leraning it.

its been a few years ago when i first started using the sovereign so i don't even remeber.
