Using Earth Magnets.

A friend of mine uses earth magnets while swinging, instead of a pinpointer. Can the use earth magnets cause any type of distortion and/or interference with the md? I'm sure the magnet is a lot cheaper. But if it causes you to lose paydirt.............

Magnets can only work with iron and steel.

They do not replace a pin pointer which works
on any conductive metal.

A magnet or a large piece of metal close to the
coil, cord or housing can cause interference.

Cell phones can also cause interference.

Most people ignore these sources of interference
until they over come the enjoyment of their
hunting.

All those tools and shovel on the belt get awful
close to the MD.

The housing is supposed to be shielded, but
the influence of magnets and large metal objects
at close proximity can penetrate the shielding.

HH,

Thanks Tabdog for the info. I'll pass it on to my buddy.

i think what your friend is trying to do is increase the electromagnetic field generated from his machine through rare earth magnets. in a scenario like this, i can easily see where he would use the magnets in a sort of pinpointer mode, in effect ellipsing [ovaling] the round electromagnetic signature emitted from the coil itself in favor of the direction of the target. phewwww, there went some brain cells! it's an interesting idea though, because anything metallic in the e-mag field will be picked up by the coil, then sent to the various electronics, digested, tested, and sent to you in the form of a low, mid, or high beep. interesting, would like to know how he does it, and the big idea behind it. hh,
