Used the F2 today.

I took a brand new F2 to work today and went to work the front yard of an older house at my lunch break. I was running no disc. and was finding Zinc's everywhere. But I got a good High Tone and the tab read a dime. So I dug the target. To my surprise I first picked out a Zinc penny and swept the hole again and still had a dime indication so I got the pinpointer out again and yes I did come up with a clad dime. I again swept the hole and got the High Tone and the upper tabs on the readout seem to jump around a bit but still indicating a coin. I prodded around the hole again and found a very rusted nail! I also dug a couple of more rusty nails that gave mostly a High Tone and the dime tab. I figure little kids living there had scattered the Zincs all over the front yard. Nothing was more than 4 inches deep. I will go back and I am hoping there will be older coinage due to the age of the house. Of course the F2 was featherlite and was not used to it. But I wanted to make this post and just give my very first experience with the F2. The jury is still out for me since I will need to try different setups for it. Thanks everyone.

After about 5 hours of hunting with the F2 it is proving to be a hot unit. I run with the iron notched out. Turn it on and hit the notch button 2 times and your ready to go. You have to get used to it's quick target response. Like tonight there was 4 targets anywhere from 4 to 6 inches apart. In one normal swing of the coil it beeped on each one. Some detectors might give you 2 beeps but the F2 picked each one out. I'm going back with the 4 inch coil.

Dang Khouse!
That sounds good! :clapping:
I hate having to wait for Income Tax time.
I might just go out on a limb and by the damn
thing now!!!!!:detecting:

I'm tickled to death to hear how well the F2 is doing for you, Khouse!! I'm still waiting for mine! Hopefully it will be here some time next week! It will be my first ever metal detector. I was already antsy with anticipation of getting getting it before I read your post. Your information has served two purposes for me... First, it has made me that much more sure that I made the right choice in the F2! Second, it has made me squirm with that much more anticipation!!!! Oh, how I wish that detector would hurry up and get here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Robert,
I tell everyone that's getting a detector for the first time this simple phrase. "Don't expect to get rich" Some new people buy a detector and expect to fill their pockets with cash. If you go hunting with a good attitude and learn your detector the goodies will follow. I can't tell you enough that the places you pick to hunt means all the difference. Practice in your own yard on target recovery. Always think in your mind YOUR best guess of what your target is before you dig. This will make you become one with your machine. I still do it after 24 years. Starting out on your F2 I would notch out iron, foil and tabs. Reduce your sensitivity on notch down from default. Then dig all REPEATABLE signals. Then after you get the hang of your detector you can go back over the same spots with less discrimination and more sensitivity. This will make your old hunting grounds new again because you'll be recovering the harder targets. Good luck!

Kenny,
Thanks for the advice and words of caution! I know I am not going to get rich with my metal detector. My brother (3 years my junior) hasn't gotten rich metal detecting in the 10 years or so that he has been doing it, I would be.... well.... STUPID to think that things would be much different for me!! Though he hasn't gotten rich, he has found enough pocket change to keep his batteries paid for, some silver coins, and several neat and interesting things. Included in his collection is part of a Civil War sword that he found on his own property. It is in rather rough condition, but neither that or the $$ value (or lack thereof) of it is the point. It's a part of history that he found! And, that is cooooool!!!

As I explained in another forum, I was introduced to "dumpster diving" when I was an Airman First Class in Germany. I found some money, and other things that I could use and were of some value. But, to find them I had to dig through tons of trash/garbage. And, I didn't mind it at all. What I enjoyed so much about dumpster diving was the hunt, the suspense, and finally the pleasant surprise of occasionally finding something of use/value!! I enjoyed it so much that if I were still physically able to do it and knew where I would be allowed to it, I'd still be dumpster diving today!! I still can't pass up a pile of "stuff" that has been set out for trash pick up without stopping and seeing what treasures might be there!! I intend to approach metal detecting the same way... gotta wade through the garbage to get the goodies!!

My wife and I own 1.5 acres in the country. To help get some practice, I have scattered about $3 worth of change and about 25 newer pull tabs on our property... one piece at time. I know it won't be the same as it would be if they were buried in the ground for years. But, I figured it would give me a starting point... kind of a "kindergarten" class to begin my learning process! I also intend to take advantage of my brother's years of experience. Then, maybe it won't be long before I graduate to 1st grade... 2nd grade... and so on!!

Thanks for the input,
Robert

I picked up a nice HP photo printer from the curb next to one of my jobs. I hooked it up and it worked like a champ. I sold it on ebay for $48 plus shipping! What could be better! Good luck detecting!!
