i was hunting an old country church today when the old guy from across the road came over to see what i had found. i was using my silver umax and he said he had a couple of detectors but he was almost blind and couldn't use them anymore. i asked what he had and he said tesoros.... a bandido ll and a lobo. he took me over and showed me the machines...kinda dusty from sitting in the corner but both machines powered up and seemed to work fine. both machines would rate about 7.5 on a scale of 10. only thing i saw wrong on the bandido was one side of the detector stand was broken off which would be easy to replace the whole arm cuff assembly. my question is what would these machines be worth if i were to make and offer on them? he mentioned 200.00 for the bandido but i'm sure he would take less since he will never be able to use them again. any help on what these machine would be worth would be appreciated........roger

p.s. i found a 1903 barber dime, a 1912 barber dime, and a 1916D buffalo nickel and a couple 1940's wheaties at the church.

I would check eBay for completed sales to get an idea on price.

And then offer him significantly less. And even less if they need service.

Selling on ebay involves a lot of work which is why most people never do it. And then there are the fees for the seller.

And if you take the detector to a shop or service that puts it on ebay for you they're going to take about half of what it sells for.

Obviously the guy was never motivated enough to put any effort into selling the detectors. He saw you and thought he might make some easy money.

Asking $200 for a dusty old damaged Bandido seems real high to me.

My wife and I frequent garage sales. It's kind of an inside joke that one of us will look at the other and say boutique. Often we'll look at each other and say it at the same time.

What we're saying is that there are some people who think their unwanted stuff is worth way more than it is, i.e. trying to get boutique prices at a garage sale.

I think your old blind guy rates a boutique.

i forgot to say the bandido isn't the umax model but the older style bandido ll detector. i was thinking of offering him 125.00 for it. is that closer to what it would be worth?
thanks.........roger

Monte speaks of that unit as one of the best for iron discrimination. The trade off is it is a lower gain (lower powered and therefore less deep) unit than the later umax bandido 2.

If you want the unit it's probably worth that. But remember you're going to have to spend some time and money on that arm cuff assembly.

If it was me I'd offer the guy less. Maybe $50 or at the most $75. Remember, to that man it is a broken down detector that he'll never use just gathering dust.

You can always come up in price when negotiating, but you can't go down.

But that's just me. Ultimately you should offer whatever you feel comfortable with.

Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Roger, I think I'd spend a few more hours at the old church and just give it some thought while detecting. There's got to be more goodies there! :)

The Bandido and Lobo are both good detectors. The Bandido & Bandido II are very similar with the main difference being the 'II' has the selector for a fast auto-tune, or a "Norm" or non-auto tuned, manually retuned function. They share the same coils as your Silver

DO NOT turn down the chance at a Bandido II or Lobo. Before we had today's Tesoros, those were the ones to beat.
But do this a different way - ask the guy to name you a price. Give him that much respect and then you will have a place to start negotiating. And as my mentor told me: NEVER be afraid to negotiate.

As you noted, he don't need em anymore... but he prolly don't want to give em away. However, he might surprise you - - so give him the chance.
