Used GTAX 550

Is this still a good capable detector? Depth? Ground Balance?

Many of the GTAx series are still floating around, and many still use them for coin shooting, with a few still take them relic hunting. They were the predecessor to the GTI series, and have been around since the early 1990s I believe. They discontinued in the mid-2000s I believe, but like I said, many still use them.

Now, with that said, I have never used one, so I do not know its overall depth or if it has GB. I hope I have helped though.

The ground balance is not settable on the 550. I found my first silver ring with my 550. Now have the sniper coil on it for tight areas at the parks or in the woods. I plan on keeping mine, even though I mostly use my 2500 now.

What would you recomend for a good used Garrett that I can pick up cheaper?

The 550 was my first machine and I still use it still about 50% of the time. Its a coin shooting monster and I've been more sucessful with it them my newest machine Minelab Explorer 2. Stated before you cannot adjust the ground balance which makes it a true "turn on and go machine" the depth is favorable as I've pulled silver dimes consistantly @ 5-7" with no doubt of what it is. I use the stock concentric coil 90% of the time and the other I have a 10x14 DD for clean older areas. I find is hits hard on silver and my 2nd season with it I pulled 94 so its not bad for a "starter" machine.

I personally would buy another 1 if it dies as I know the machine and its reliable so what more could you ask for? If you have a line on 1 for a good price I would buy it. Garrett makes good machines and no matter which one you go with you wont be disappointed. The Ace 250 is a good machine and the price is right for starting out and if you like the hobby the options are there to upgrade to the AT pro series which IS the best bang for your buck on the market as of today.

Hope this helps,

Dana
