The solution to the problem became apparent when I removed the vinyl end cover and water dripped out!!
Careful investigation revealed a small puncture in the cover that allowed a small amount of water to enter the space where the push-button switch is housed.
A liberal coating of good old "Shoe Goop" inside and outside the puncture has taken care of that problem.
The switch was failing and for less than $7.00 I bought two new ones at Radio Shack.
Before I changed the switch I direct connected the battery wires to the leads from the inner works and the old sweetie worked like new!!
No water had found its way into the battery compartment as yet.
I cleaned and dried everything and installed the new switch and have since used it for almost ten hours of hunting.
All systems are a go!!
The original mod. from Dec. 2009 is still to be found on page-2 of this forum.
I did make a small change to better secure the part of the end cover that is under the hose clamp.

I placed three "O" rings, lubricated with plumber's silicone grease, just in front of the yellow ring to allow the vinyl to be better supported at that point

The clamp now sits more securely and would be much more difficult to dislodge than before, plus the "O" rings help provide a better seal.
