:usaflag: Vaquero depth

Bill in Texas

New member
:detecting: I just did some air testing with my Vaquero and found out something interesting. It has better depth with a fresh battery than with 2/3 used up ones (by my battery meter or 3 beeps on the detector). It still run smoothly, but just does not get as much depth. With fresh battery I get 12/14 inches with a Quarter and with 2/3 used up ones I get about 8/10 inches. Has anybody else found this out with other detectors? Bill in Texas

Yes Sir,
This is exactly what my Cibola does. Also seems to generate more false signals with a weak battery. I have read many posts on the various forums that indicate the Tejon loses depth at around 3 or 4 beeps on the test. I think it has more to do with the milliamp rating of the batteries rather than the voltage drop. Maybe some of you electronic gurus could help us out with this.

I have been told by my dealer that the Vaq will work to full capacity as low as 6 volts, even if you put a fresh battery in it will be regulated down.
Its the voltage that counts, i have not used my vaq at 6 volts , but the Vaq works i know at 6.5 volts to full capacity,
I will run a Duracell down to just over 6 volts and let you know how i go,

Mine starts to fall off at about 7 volts. I have caught a brand new battery with low voltage. It was in a pack of eight and was the only one. Also I don't have any better luck with copper tops as I do with a store brand I use. It was a copper top that was in it at the time I first caught it doing it. Also my V runs a lot longer in silent mode than in all metal. My wife's Compadre does the same thing and so does my Silver Umax. I have not noticed the Inca doing that, but I have not really tried it and it eight AA batteries. Bill in Texas ==== PS My Garrett (six C's) and Fisher (two 9's) does the same thing (even a little quicker) by my voltage meter, but on board battery checks are different.

Funny that just last night I was thinking the same thing. I got a variable power supply and changed the voltage around from 8 to 10 volts. One new alkaline battery
had a little over 9 volts. I put it in the V and turned it on. It then read 8.54 volts. I am thinking a battery pack with 6 alkaline batteries(6 x 1.5 = 9 V) or 8 Nicad (8 x 1.2v = 9.2) would keep
the V working at peak much longer. A 9v alkaline has average 500 mAh and a AA alkaline has abt 2000 mAh. I think the Nicads keep a constant voltage so I am thinking of
using 8 of them with the V and would save a lot of money and give 9.2 volts also. The V would weigh more but would stay at peek much longer and save a lot of money being able to
charge the Nicads up to 1000 times. It would be a mod that would leave the V untouched if you didn't like it.

I have mentioned before that my V doesn't run as smooth when running high sensitivity (8+) if the batt signal is at 3 or 4 beeps uasually about 10-12 hrs. I don't usually run in the boost range, but will if the gound and trash permit. Never really gave any thought to the depth falling off. I'll be taking a closer look.

Bottom line is this, if you use a brand new battery i use duracells, Voltage of battery out of the Box 9.36 Volts/ Put the battery in the machine it reads 9,21 Volts when the machine is switched on.
Run down a Duracell yesterday to 6.9 volts in the machine turned on, this Performed tops no probs at all,
Will run the battery down to 6 volts out of the machine, think it will fail to perform lower than 6 volts/out of the machine.
A battery that reads 7 Volts should be OK to use, but if your 7volt battery does not work in the machine put a volt meter across the battery in the machine turned on, see what Volts you get, crap battery's are just that plain crap,

Take care
Dave/

I will have to try a duracell battery and run some more tests. I know there is a lot of difference between batteries. I also know that a variable DC power supply does not
duplicate a 9 volt battery exactly. I still think this is a good question only for the reason that a metal detectorist might miss some targets if they are not aware how their
machine and batteries work together.

If you go to a previous post," Hot Rod Cibola/ Vaquero Pictures", you will see my "V" with a battery pack put on by Dave when he owned it. You can use eight rechargeable batteries, or six Duracell's, and two dummy batteries to get nine volts. Put batteries in, in the Spring and go all year..Also. adds to the balance, cordially Nad
