:usaflag: There Will Be No Hunting On The Connecticut Shore Today!!

Winds out of the south at 20-30 MPH with gusts into the 40s and the waves are jumping!!

From the vantage point of a ledge outcropping at the extreme eastern end of my hunting grounds I was able to capture a few pretty good shots of why there will be no hunting this AM!

There are a few rain drops on the lens and I am thankful for the water-proof camera!

I picked up a lobster-pot buoy and a few pieces of plastic on my walk, but I certainly didn't spend much time out there this AM even though the south wind did take the temperatures into the mid-fifties!

(I left this shot unchanged to show the low light conditions and adjusted the others to provide better detail.)

I suspect there will be some changes in the beach contours come daylight tomorrow, but not nearly as many as there would have been if this was a moon tide with extreme high and low water levels.

I suspect that these conditions and moon tide would have taken out this fence once and for all for this winter!

Thanks for looking,

CJ

I see Pre Cambrian shield rock close where your located. .
Other part of the beach look like nice sand.
Are you the only detector on that sandy beach or are there others that share it.
The beaches are similar here except smaller also tied in with the rock shield.
The only difference is our are on fresh water.
Nice location your at .

Hi Joel,

During "the season" there are lots of hunters on dry land and a few in the water.

I live close by so have an advantage of being able to monitor the shifting sands and if I can take a little time off from work, I water hunt.

When my time is limited I will hunt the dry/wet sand, but I prefer the water.

Thanks for your reply,

CJ

Today's follow up!

I couldn't get to the same vantage point as yesterday because of the high tide.

This is close enough for you to get a good look!

The wind has calmed down, but the large ground swells keeeeep coming!

A high wind at this tide can push the waves up to and in some cases over the breakwater only a few yards in front of the cottages.

The large ground swells have pulled hundreds of tons of sand down off the beach and it is one smooth slope almost all the way to the cottages!

The water slams into these stone breakwaters sometimes so hard the ground shakes!!

The swells are slowing down as these pics were taken and still I managed to catch some spray!

The fence has almost been destroyed, but the steel chain holding it together is preventing the pieces from washing away.

It would seem that there is a method to the owner's madness this past year in that he will be able to re-use the posts etc!!

To the left of the post the high tide line is visible where seaweed was deposited.

This fence was perhaps twenty feet out in the rough water during yesterdays blow!!

Tomorrow the scenery will likely be different.

Should it be different and interesting enough I may post more pics,

CJ

That fence has gotto go

Ugly fence and the oceans letting it be knw it doesn't want it there...

I was down to Hammonasset Beach today and lasted about 2 hours. You are right the wind was just a bit too much to stay any longer. Not much to find only 48 cents but I picked up 2 nice conch shells. :)

Hi lafatlife'

Since I started metal detecting in 1982 I have hunted close to home at the Old Lyme beaches.

Several of my hunting friends hunt every stretch of beach in the tri-state area and really know their way around.

I have only been able to hunt as my work schedule and family obligations have allowed and have limited my travel so that I can get in the most hunting for the least travel.

My success rate has been fine for me and there are few hunters that have done as well as I have and maybe only one that has done better at the close by beaches than I have.

I've thought that one day, time etc. permitting, I would like to hunt some of these other beaches, but I just don't feel as though I have "finished" with "my beaches" yet.

It wasn't nearly as rough yesterday as it was the day before when I first posted the above message.

It is always a good thing when I can get out there even if I can only get in an hour or so, but I don't like to be rushed so when time is short I stay on the beach and save the water for when I have enough time that I can hunt at my slow, methodical pace.

Maybe we'll meet on the shore one day,

CJ

Joel,

I have no knowledge of stone except that it is usually hard enough to hurt when I stub my bare toe so I must bow to your knowledge of these things.

I do know that this outcropping of ledge is an interesting formation and stable enough that there is a surveyors marker of brass embedded in it.

I'll get some afternoon shots that show the wonderful coloration of the different layers and post them in a different message for those among the readers that are interested.

Regards,

CJ

Since this is a metal detecting forum, it occurred to me that perhaps it would be more appropriate to post the pictures of the stone outcropping at the 20th Century Tales Forum.

In a day or so I'll do that.

Regards,

CJ

Probable shouldn't say anything................. but the Pacific NEVER looks that calm, and the wind never quites blowing,. but again theres never snow on the beach. At least in central CA. 'course, we never detect up Dabloons either. :buds:

Hello Fellow Hunter,

I've never heard of a Spanish coin washing ashore along the Long Island Sound beaches although these is an old story about pirate caches being spread along the north eastern shores.

As for snow, we had a minor storm today and are supposed to get more sometime in the near future (possibly Saturday).

Makes for lousy hunting in my opinion, but some hunters like John-Edmonton are willing to hunt in the snow at temps below zero!

I'll pass,

CJ

There is nothing wrong with sticking to Old Lyme. I love that area. I am in NW Connecticut so beach trips are few and far between. I wish I lived closer but that is ok. You can reap the benefits of one less detector at your beach most of the time. :)

I usually hunt around the Milford, Connecticut area with my Garrett Infinium. I live in Mass. only 4 miles from the CT. line and it takes me about a 1 1/2 to get to the shore. Where are the pictures taken that you post and where do you hunt, maybe I'll run into you some time when I'm down that way.

Hi Jay,

Go to the Beach and Water/Scuba Dive Forum and to pages 5 and 8 for pictures of the local beach where I hunt.

Look for "reading a beach" page -8 and "more reading a beach" page-5

CJ

Thanks for the reply! I going to have a two week layoff from work and I hope to do some hunting during that time, and I hope it warms up a little. I know what you mean when you say the CT. shore line can be a little cold. I went to Milford a fe weeks ago on a Sunday and it was a rather warm day but NO LUCK. I keep you posted if I have a good find.
