:usaflag: Startling Find!!

This AM while combing the beach and adding to the ton or so of trash I have picked up in the past year I was astonished to see this stone point laying fully exposed on the surface of the fine sand.

It is a medium sized point in good condition with one ear chipped off and a dull point as one might expect from wear of wave action.

I've covered this stretch of sand many times (sometimes twice a day) for over a year and never found a hint of arrow heads until now.

It is only a few yards from the waters edge (visible at the lower left center of this shot and the next one too).

The cottage is only a stones throw away too.

My daily combing has been very close in that I have found maybe fifty pounds of "sea glass" and some of the pieces as small as pin heads, so had there been a point visible I'm sure I would have found it.

This one practically begged to be picked up!!

I'm not sure what kind of stone it is, but I like it anyway!

I find quite a few each year.... but that is due to the lake rising and falling.... thus exposing new areas!!

Well done!!

There is an old saying that treasure is where you find it and I guess arrow heads are kinda like that too.

I was surprised to find the point as much from no one else picking it up as for its being there at all.

Of course there aren't many places in this country where points haven't been lost.

There is a place near the mouth of the Connecticut River near here where Native encampments were common and storms have un-covered lots of pottery shards, flint tools etc over the years. Once a human skull was found too I've heard.

I have walked the shoreline there several times over the years and never found anything of note except modern trash.

Thanks for your kind replies Friends,

CJ

I would far prefer finding an indian artifact than any find I have ever made with a detector. I found some in BC that were standing out just like that one. You can not believe you are seeing what you are seeing

These first two is of an arrowhead Mike found. There were cattle walking all around it and it could have been broken but Mike got lucky

Every time I see that country he lives in the background, I drool...Mountains running down to the water always get my attention. Then to see it without a million homes built on it is icing on the cake..... Any beautiful scenery around here, they ruin it in short order by building it to death and making it off limits. Coast line, lakes.....all become off limits to the rest of the people in the state....... I keep seeing these arrow heads now I've got to make more time to see if I can find one. Mikie sent me a beautiful Bird point so know what they look like now.... Just got to sharpen my eye. I have a few spots I GPS at that are said to have them. I gotto go check it out....

I found one on Onsett Beach here in MA on one of my drive and get out and have a walk to clear my head of things very surprised to see it right there on the swimming beach given all the fishing and beach traffic ... Nice find Cupajo..

Nice pics in your reply Royal! (Even the one with "what's his name" in it!!):)

That's one fine point too!

The cottage belongs to an eccentric gentleman I have known for many years. (I used to open and close it each season as it wasn't a year-round house.)

My house is year round and built on a 100X100 lot as required for year round use here. It's maybe a half mile from this one as the crow flies and about a five minute walk from the water.

I have been looking for years to see if I might find a nice stone tool or point and have found them in Texas when I lived there as a youngster, but this is the first I found here in Ct.

Thanks all for your nice replies,

CJ

Wayne I'm not sure, but I think it may be a dark flint.

The Obsidian I have seen in the past looked much like black glass and had more shine as I recall.

Of course the water would dull the edges with time and wave action and sand away any shine..

Thanks for your thoughts about it Friend,

CJ

for many years growing up. Never found one... When they were clearing the land at Millstone Nuke, I was there, lot of the guys found them as there were shell heaps there from years of their summer quarters. I saw pottery pieces, axe heads, arrow heads but I personally never found one.... That looks like a really nice one and looks like the wave action might of smoothed it some. Just to find it here after all these years, pretty neat find. Not sure if it is still there but their used to be a A frame building out at Millstone with all minds of Indian stuff they found there over the years... There is a another nice one up at Fort Shantock in Montiville that has them on display also just before you go into Mohegan Sun...

Again, nice fine... I'd rather find those also...

During today's beach combing I was especially aware of stones that looked as if they may have been "worked and found one that would have made a small scraper. It was flint and could have been a tool, but I suspect it was a "natural" and just "Wishful thinking".

Amazing how much beach glass I found while really focusing on the stones!

GL&HH Friends,

CJ

PS One more stainless fish-hook a few days ago!!
