:usaflag: Squirrels Gotta Eat Too!!

I placed the shepherd's crook and bird feeder where I could see it during the day and enjoy watching the birds feeding as I had my lunch and sometimes early dinner.

I had seen squirrels climbing the narrow steel rod/crook. but none have been able to master the art of eating from the small feeder until now!

I sat amazed at how well this one went up the pole and made a meal of the bird-seed.

The fat sucker made itself at home and after a while scurried down to search for dropped seeds and later climbed up again for another go.

I had seen videos of the little beasties scurrying past all sorts of obstacles to get at feeders and suspected that sooner or later one would get at this one too.

After watching several fall as they attempted to get at the feeder I was beginning to wonder if one would figure it out.

I don't have to wonder any longer and here is the proof,

then it gets expensive. I finally defeated them but it took a bunch of tries. I use a thing I got at Walmart, it looks like a frizby and it works well but if they can jump to it from those bushes you are screwed. I have not had a squirrel in mine for three years but man before that it was a mess. Cute but they can eat acorns as far as I am concerned

It posed and watched me for a moment to be sure I wasn't a threat.

At no more than ten feet away I had a pretty good look at the critter and think it is a female.

Females is cagey in the animal world too!

I saw no evidence of "male-hood" as I have seen many times when skinning one of the things.

I'l surely pick one up tomorrow, but I wanted to see how long it would take one to figure it out.

The feeder has been there under constant observation for over a month and this is the first one to get it.

The rest will no doubt follow her scent to a meal.

It's tempting to limber up my pellet rifle for some squirrel stew!!

It's been years,

until I got that guard I relocated 36 squirrels, over 40 chipmunks and 5 coons and three skunks. I show a few squirrels and chipmunks when I just got tired of hauling them off a couple times. Now I use the guard. For the Shepard hooks I had to saw the guard in half and slip it over the shaft and reconnect it. I used fiberglass but you will figure it out. Those dang squirrels can keep you broke:blink:

Not and easy winter for them this year. That one is pretty flexiable. I watch them all the time at breakfast as they are all around here. What amazes me is the speed they can run head first down a tree.

Sunny,

I'm pretty sure it's a she and yes it's time for me to do something about her interferring with the birds.

Royal's idea about the "Frizby" sounds good, but squirrel stew doesn't sound bad either!!

Royal you were right about the bushy tailed rats using the limb to get to the feeder and after I put a plastic plate on the shephard's crook I looked out and saw one sitting on top of the crook!

It shinnied down the cord and soon had to top knocked askew and dumped half the feeders contents on the ground.

It fed wwell on the ground for a while then I watched the stinker jump from the snow bank up onto the feeder where the fat little devil ate some more!

That feeder is gone now and I'll let you know how the new squirrel proof one works!!

Holds over four pounds of seed and looks like it may actually be squirrel proof!! ($10.00 at a local discount store!)

It was unit 10 next to me, around 6 pm, I was walking home, a few kids said a bear was shot, thought they were drinking.
Seems was true a bear was feeding on a birdfeeder, this was in the middle of city, the cops killed it.....

Fortunatly bears haven't been a problem yet although a friend assures me one was seen last year less than five miles from here.

This AM my wife called me to check out a fur-ball eating from the new squirrel proof feeder and sure enough one was stuffing itself while hanging upside down.

The bottom of the unit has a narrow shelf that seed spilled into when I filled the tall cylinder with seeds.

After watching the little beast for a while it occured to me that it wouldn't be able to get at the narrow shelf through the wire cage if I put a large stainless hose clamp around the bottom of the wire cage.

I did and have watched three fur balls search every inch of the feeder where they might get some seed and then scurry off in disgust, unfed!!
