After years of finding coins and jewelry water hunting I have decided perhaps I need to learn a bit more about which of the finds have value and which go in the scrap pile.

Is Sterling the same as .925?

What is .800? (I have one piece with that stamped on the back.)

I have a few nickles that must have silver in them from the looks of the oxidation so are there silver nickles??

A little clarification would be appreciated,

CJ

.925 silver is also known as Sterling and .800 silver is known as International Coin Silver, 80% silver. 1942-1945 War Nickels contain 35% silver and U.S. coin silver is 90%

War nickels are from 1942 - 1945 and you can tell them apart by a large mint mark above Montecello. P for Philadelphia, S for San Francisco and D for Denver

If you look on line for( silver coin melt calculator) i think its kitco the program will do the work for you on silver coins you just type in the number
of coins in the box for that type of coin i,e, war nickle, barber dimes, mercs, rosies, qtrs, halfs silver dollars ect click on the calculate button and it gives you a $$$ amount +/- 5% most of the time its right on the money i use it before sending any junk silver coins into the refiners and it might be over/under 5.00 to 10.00 dollars

Here is a link to silver melt coin value.........

I check it every day that I find silver.........which has been quite often lately........
