:usaflag: HELP!!! Old Model Excalibur/ Newer Models Excal II etc. How can I find out what the differences are? HELP!!!

The only number I can find on the machine is EX 200 on the circuit board.

So far the only information I can find in posts doesn't mention changes and how the machine capabilities may have improved.

This Excal has the old style 73/4" (OD) horseshoe shaped coil and works just fine both in the water and on the beach.

I'm thinking I'll use it until such time as it fails to perform. (They all do sooner or later!)

Is there a manual available for the older machines?

I have booklets on all the new models and there is no mention of the older machine.

I want to be sure I don't waste time on a machine that is performing far below present standards!!

Many Thanks for any help you may offer,

CJ

Thanks Friend!!

Done it just now!!

I kinda hoped for some info from users too without any manufacturer bias!

I was shopping around when I bought me Excal 1000 last month. I went to Minelabs site and the specs on the electronics were exactly the same between the older 800/ 1000 and the Excal II. I found a dealer that had a 1000 with a water damaged box for $790 and the Minelab warranty....I grabbed it right away.

FYI Plugger,

I E-mailed Minelab after you suggested I do so and I've heard Zip!

They seem to get mixed reviews when it comes to customer care!

Thanks anyway,

CJ

CJ,

You have one of the very early Excaliburs that was made by Gary Storm in New York. I have one that is EX 1640 and it's 13 years old. I still use it a lot and it performs just as well as the new ones. Some people think the old ones are actually better. The older machines have a nicer tonal range and it's easier to hear the differences in target responses.

Be careful with the coil cable. The older gray cables are not as rugged as the new black cables. It's probably too short to hip mount but if it isn't don't do it!

The only reason I can see for you to want a newer Excalibur would be if you wanted a larger coil. You will probably eventually want one of each. There are times and conditions where you may still want that smaller coil.

Thanks John for your information.

One can never know too much about his machine!

GL&HH Friend,

CJ

Just like John said above, the older Excals seem to go on & on & on. Mine is 13yrs old too (EX1084) and hasn't missed a beat "touch wood".
But I do get concered about how many times I can go from diving configuration to beach detecting and the wear and tear
the gray cable gets from being moved around so much, its gotta give someday.
I was also worried about the old coil wearing out as it looked like it was getting a bit thin so I siliconed a 5mm clear perpex
ring on the base so now I'm wearing that out instead of the coil.
Anyway , good luck with the Excal, ya won't go back, when she sind's such a sweet song.
Cheers and HH

Hi AH,

Getting all this favorable feedback is wonderful! The only number I could find on the machine is EX200 on the circuitboard and so far no one seems to be able or willing to inform me about when it was built!

As suggested I E-mailed Minelab and no reply!

Perhaps they read all my posts about how the machine leaked!?

That may be why they want nothing to do with me!

It works just fine now and I am just trying to gather a bit of information about it.

Many thanks for your reply Friend,

CJ

Yeah ... that is it ... we who know have taken an oath not to share that information with anyone.
Common men just can handle the truth.

And ... Minelab refuses to reply to anyone that has had problems with their detectors.
They have a special computer just for keeping track of those troublemakers.

Yeah ... that is it ... now you know ... its all a big secret plot to have nothing to do with CJ cause his detector leaked.
