:usaflag: First Time In Water For Excalibur, It LEAKS!!

Yesterday I took my new/used Excal out for a spin!

I was waiding in waist deep salt water!

The control housing was never more than a foot under water.

I had great fun until I started getting loud, almost explosive, sounds in my earphones!

Upon investigating I found about a table spoon full of water in the control housing!!

There were no obvious indications of damage, IE cracks, chips, Etc.

Have any of you had a similar experience and how did you deal with it?

CJ

If there's no cracks or damage, the rubber seals could be dried out or broken. You need to get that water out of there pronto!!

Dried it out.

Q-tips and a little electronics cleaner to remove salt etc.

Seals dry, but seem OK!

Will use silicone grease and leak test before use.

Electronics seem to function OK!

From staining it looks as if it may have done this before, but because I didn't know to look for these things--------------

Main thing though is the electronics were abovce the stains and hopefully will last long enough for me to get enough gold to pay for the thing!!

pod and needless to say, it went back and I fortunately got a refund. If sand was in there, water had to be also.

Good luck and hope it works out.

Thanks Friend,

After maybe 20 minutes of wading in waist deep water the Excal started acting up with loud blasts of sound.

I took a good look and found about a tablespoon of water in the control.housing!

I propped it up to keep the water from the electricals until I could get a small allen wrench this morning.

I drained it and dried it as well as I could and then cleaned it using an electronics cleaner and long wooden Q-tips.

I further aired it out and hooked the battery pod back up and briefly ran it to determine if it was toast and it seems to be OK!!

I then lubed the "O" ring seals with silicone and reassembled the control housing and pressure tested it under a foot of fresh water in a deep pail.

After a few minutes I was able to find a few drops in the housing again!

I can't tell if it is getting in past the "O" rings or the electrical connectors on the end caps.

I'm drying out the unit and I'll continue investigating.

You'll get those loud blasts every 30 seconds or so when the battery is getting down, hope you sort out the leak

Thanks kered for you information!

The noise was constant and later when the water was cleared out the machine settled down and purred like a kitten

I'm working at sealing the housing to stop future leaks from happening.

These are supposed to be water proof to 200 feet and I'm haveng trouble sealing mine for wading!

Cleaned and dressed with silicone grease the "O" ring seals and a couple of drops still found their way inside when submerged a foot!

Dried it out and will check the electronic connectors on the end caps next.

GL&HH Friend,

CJ

No CJ, mine have never leaked a drop. It may be a good idea to go ahead and send the unit on into Minelab and have it checked out thoroughly anyway, since you bought it used. They will check everything over and pressure check the unit. It should be good as new. That water has to be dried out, as corrosion will begin to form immediately. I'd send it in.

The leak seemes to be from a bad glue joint that I descovered by pressure-testing the housing.

I used a good old hardware store Duro glue to seal inside and out and now there seems to be no leak!

I'll have to reassemble the machine and test again, but I think that's all it was---a bad glue joint!

Wish me luck Friends,

CJ

I just finished assembling the machine and placed it a foot under water and no leaks!!!

It sounds great and I can't wait to take it out for a spin!!

I'll monitor it closely for a while, but don't expect any more problems.

It was suggested I send the Excal to the repair depot, but I couldn't without trying my best to deal with the problem.

It's always a pleasure to overcome obstacles and if I'm successful I not only learn more about my machine, but I don't have to wait for someone else to do what I can do for myself!!!!!

GL&HH Friends,
