Greetings All, my name is Cody, I am new to this great forum and hunting, I am looking to buy equipment for my hunting, although I am a beginner I like to start at professional level technology, so would you please recommend me what detector (s) and what coils.

What about 3d underground imaging, are they real? are they useful?

what is the biggest coil that can cover as wide as possible without forfeiting the accuracy.

is metal discrimination possible, I spoke with minilab and they said there is no such thing, it is just data and you interpret them and the accuracy cannot be guaranteed on what metal you found.

I can buy more than one device to create a nice bundle that complements each other. and here what I am looking for (depth - wide screen - accuracy - 3d imaging - metal cremation- and pipe pointing if possible)

budget is not an issue here, so I am not looking for budget-friendly I am looking for a high tech sort of thing, one more thing I truly prefer something the is American made or at least sold by an American company located in the U.S.

Please advice and thank you for your time in advance.

3d underground imaging in only useful for very large objects. Ie.: discerning ground disturbance for outhouse shafts, or tracing the outlines of building foundations, underground bunkers, etc.... There is the common misconception that they somehow show magical shapes (horseshoes, ring vs pulltab, etc....) . They don't. The smallest smallest pixel in the most advanced technology, is still an inch across. So everything we md'rs find (coins, tabs, foil, etc....) is ... doh. 1 pixel. You have gained no useful information. Even larger objects are STILL nothing but "a mess of blotchy pixels".

Not sure what you are looking for, but .... if it's metal objects, I'd say you're just as well off with a 2-box detector. If you're trying to trace underground anomolies for some reason (like if you're a bottle digger looking for outhouse shafts), then you can knock yourself silly with that expensive gear. But we'd need to know your objectives.

As for telling metals apart from each other : Minelab is right: They detectors TID today only tell conductivity. Not composition. And unfortunately: A) size plays into the resulting TID, B) many items share the same conductivity.

If you're getting a good idea, from the audio, of the size of the object, then you can make educated guesses on coin vs foil and so forth.

If you tell us what type hunting you're going to pursue (relics ? beach ? caches ? nuggets/prospecting ?, etc...) we can comment further.

Well, mainly I am interested in precious metals, and I need a device or several devices that can detect as deep and as accurate as possible, I am interested in all sizes, sp what do you recommend?

And I will be searching in the beaches and deserts! no muds ,

Welcome to the forum, with all the requirements that you have mentioned alas no detecting machine like that has been invented yet, some specific niche detectors will help you in certain areas, like say a 2 box machine for depth but of course the depth is dictated by the size of the target item,a car size item maybe upto 15-20ft,specific gold machines like Pulse machine are more designed for the ground environment that you will find gold in,but once again it wont indicate that it is gold,it could be a lead bullit that was fired in a area that gold is usually found.

So unfortunately your 'dream machine' has not been invented as yet, sorry too burst ones bubble but if such a machine was available everyone would be using it and making huge amounts of money.

The only machines that come close are possibly a 'Long Range Locator' :) or a 'MINELAB EQUINOX' :) both machines are being promoted the best metal detecting machines on the planet,of course i cannot confirm this as i dont plan on being sucked in with the sales blurb on both of these new technologies

Sorry, but this still didn't answer the question. I mean, ALL of us want "precious metals" (that's the whole point of metal detecting, eh ?) . But you're not indicating if you're referring to nuggets (as in prospecting). Or coins/jewelry. Or caches. All of which can be "precious metals".

And you add: "in all sizes". I am assuming that meant the precious metals of all sizes. Right ? Thus I predict you will say something like "all of the above" ? It doesn't work like that. That would be like asking: "What is the best motor vehicle?" Someone might answer: What do you want ? Good gas mileage ? 0 to 100 in 7 seconds ? Hauling gravel to the quarry ? Taking the kids to soccer practice ? pulling stumps out of the ground ? You might try to answer "all of the above". But as you can see, it doesn't work like that. There are different motor vehicles for different functions. So too is it with metal detectors.

There ARE many machines that tout the ability to switch back and forth between various venues (nuggets and/or coin/relics) with the flips of switches. However: They will excel in neither venue. They'll have compromises, and get their b*tt spanked by specialty machines in those classes.

If you just to focus on coins/relics, here's my arsenal: A Minelab Explorer II, with sunray probe. And a Tesoro 2-filter (Bandido in my case, but there's several similar that will accomplish same thing). The Tesoro I reach for in very nail riddled ghost-townsy conditions. The Explorer does all else . Eg. beach, turf, fields, etc...

If you're looking for caches, get a TM 808

If you're looking for nuggets, that's out of my league. I'm not a nugget guy.

I have read all your posts.I have also read all the responses. All very good ones I might add.

Cody I think you need to do some more studying about metal detecting and recovery so you have a better understanding .

You might also want to read our prospecting forum posts. It almost sounds to me you want to mine not detect.

Several of the manufactures of detecting equipment offer two box units for deeper buried caches if that is your goal.

Remember the key to successful detecting is the location you detect.. Mostly detecting is a hobby. And it's finding Coins Rings and other lost small items in the USA.
I'm not trying to damper your spirit.... In fact I admire it. I also wish you the greatest of success in the hobby.

Like many new to the hobby of metal detecting your dreams may be just that. Dreams of finding that big find. (Hey," we all have those dreams").. It can be done..But it's not likely .. unless you find that spot or know of something having been hidden in the ground. View this great hobby as just that a "Hobby"....

Lots of very good all Around detectors out there, but you will NEVER have it all... if price isn't an issue, and that seems to be the case, then it'll just come
Down to personal preference... looks, available coils, battery life, tone quality, accessories, waterproofing etc...There are always gonna be a few negative comments regardless of machine... we all have different sites, techniques and setting preferences... what works for one may not for another.... you do NOT need the most expensive and I would avoid too many features... all companies make great units and all miss the mark occasionally... mega, tom in ca, monte, kieth, nasa tom, and a hand full of others advice should be heeded....
you are probably going to end up with a couple of different machines, that each cost between $500 and $1000 new or check the classifieds... lots of guys here that try new technology and units when they come Out and then sell them off if they find there is no real abvantage over what they have... get a deal on a nice used unit here, and you can always get your $$$ back by reselling it if you decide to change things up... I plan on and really enjoy all of the units I own and they are each different and each gets used... I used four detectors on my last hunt... covered the same ground four times, and found more Stuff each time... started with the IDX PRO, then the bandido 2uMax, LST, and lastly the CoRe... some of the iffy signals found with one detector would reveal itself as a 100% digable target with another.... had I ran the area with just one unit I am sure that I would have left several good targets.. good luck and let us know what you decide. HH

Alright Cody,a couple things I’ve noticed right away.
1) You say you’ll be searching the beach and the desert. Your username suggests you live in Alabama. Can you elaborate,as there are no deserts in Alabama?
2) What is “metal cremation” and “pipe pointing”? If you are typing on a phone, please be careful to double check what is being sent if this is incorrect terminology.
3) You say finances are not an issue. 10 grand is nothing to sneeze at for a dedicated nugget hunter. Are you SURE there’s NO limit?

If you are looking for valuables like everyone else is in terms of coins, jewelry and possibly nuggets, then we can get on with some recommendations. Right now your parameters are too vague to determine how to guide you. Tell us....
1) What type of valuable are you interested in finding at the beach?
2) What type of valuable are you looking for in the desert?
3) Why have you limited yourself to these two particular locations?

Other things to consider are....will you have an issue swinging a 5 lb machine all day if you’re planning all day hunts? Will you be going INTO the water when at the beach or just getting close? Will you be hunting ghost towns in the desert or looking for old mines and tailings piles? Are you following stories and legends or are you striking out on your own with general knowledge of how hunting is done?

Welcome to the forum! Provide us with well detailed descriptions of what your end goals are. From there a good plan can be formed so that you can be successful.

Hello Kevin aka IDXmonster.
Did you get the detech DD coil working I sent ya last yr for the IDX??
