:usaflag: Are Coil Covers A Good Idea??

A post in the Metal Detecting Forum has had some interesting replies, but this (my reply) is a fine illustration of the issue at hand!

My Garrett's Infinium got a little heavy for me the last time I had it out for a short 2-3 hour salt water hunt with the brand new 11X14" Mono Coil.

This AM I decided to take it out again to see if somehow I might find a more easier way of handling it and perhaps do some wet sand hunting too.

I happened to look at the bottom of the coil and imagine my surprise when I found this!!!!!!!!!!!!

The coil was scuffed through in several places where the plastic seems to be very thin and there is nothing inside it but a hollow space as far as I can see!

I have many hundreds of hours of water hunting behind me with the five water machines I own, but have never had a coil show so much wear so fast.

It's as if the bottom covering was being eaten away on just about the whole coil!!

The surface is not even uniformly scuffed in that the original shiny finish is largely still there and yet the plastic is gone on the edges where the bottom plate attaches!

I was planning the "Bed Liner Spray" covering as protection as I have in the past, but wanted to be sure the coil was alright first as it was a new one!!

I have an E-mail w/pics into Garrett and am awaiting a reply!!

Wish me luck,

CJ

wow how many hrs did that take? amazing. hope the fix it for you CJ.

i wish whites would make the bottom of cover smooth i like keeping it flat on the hard wet sand but it can get stuck with the little dimples on it,

how does that "Bed Liner Spray" dry is it smooth?

cheers for the help CJ

Hi AJ,

I mentioned in the post above that I was only water hunting for 2-3 hours.

The bottom locally is very harsh on equipment from stone abrasion, but none of my 5 water machines have ever shown such destruction!

There are many opinions about the truck bed liner spray both pro and con.

I have used it once and frankly have had better luck with the rubberized tool handle dip.

Google plasti-dip (By Performix) for a great look at the product! or contact here:

i guess this one would make sense ? Recreational Vehicles & Marine Uses?

AJ most coils that large are a challenge to pinpoint in the water.

I was still learning how this coil works when I tired out and called it a day.

I did manage to recover most of the targets though!

yes big coil but cover some ground with that beauty wish could change coils on DF this machine collecting ever stop lol?

i am at 6 and counting some my say total madness

The product I use is specificly entended for coating tool handles, but I suspect that just about any of the products will work well!!

CJ

AJ,

I used the "dip" version and a brush, but I suspect the "spray-on version" will work equally well if not better!

CJ

Try some marine epoxy on the bottom... I used that and and 2nd coat of clear epoxy and it's very durable.

About the time I wrote this post and added the pics of my damaged coil I called Garrett's and spoke to Brad in their customer service dept.

Yesterday received a new coil at no charge and it would have arrived sooner, but they were out of stock.

I closely compared the damaged coil and the new one and in carefully probing the "cracks" found they were surface damage and didn't go as deep as they looked!

I must apologize to Garrett's for my impatience and for not investigating more carefully before I put pics on the net that aren't as bad as they look!!

I do feel that there should have been less scuffing for the short time I had the coil in the water!

Brad assured me that coating Garrett's coils will not void their warranty and that they do get them in coated with all sorts of substances.

Thanks Brad and Garrett's for your prompt and courteous service and your understanding and patience with an old Hunter,

CJ

The main reason I use a factory coil cover is on the inside of the COVER, My Name, Address and Phone # are inscribed. If somebody steals my CZ, I can alert Fisher and the police and if it EVER gets sent in for service, MAYBE just MAYBE, The Fisher tech will have it in their database. Or if the police recover one (joke of the day!!) The cover can be removed and I can verify it is mine.

CJ i hunt rocks & gravel to & go through two coil covers a season, my excals coil is in great nick with no scuffing i cable tie the cover on so i dont loose it mid hunt.

If you are going to put a coil cover on...first obviously clean your coil. Next after putting the coil cover on, use a silicon and go around the edges of the coil cover to SEAL it up. If you do not do this you will be constantly pulling the cover off and removing sand, dirt, etc that gets in there...can do damage to your coil grinding in there, and also can make your ground balance off. And if you have a coil cover that fits like mine for my V3i...OMG its an incredible pain to get off...so its siliconed and always stays on.

Ive used the Dupli Color bed liner spray for several years now with no problems. I first tried epoxy and that chipped on clam shells and rocks, but this bedliner spray is great and Im gonna continuing using it. I would imagine the other bedliner sprays work just as well, dupli color is the brand they carry where I get my auto parts.
I see no advantage to coil covers over the bed liner spray, you have to clean them often and they add weight on the end of the rod where you feel it.
I saw recently theres also a rubberized spray you can buy, they have it in the autoparts store as well, I think that was about $7/spray can versus the $9/spray can I paid. Im only on my second can, it really goes a long way. I should have counted how many coils Ive done with the first can:thumbup:
