USAF Pilot ring going home.

Well I have been searching for the owner of the USAF pilot ring for a while. I was able to get on Spense Air Base web site and I posted information on it. I also looked down the guestbook and contacted any individual that graduated from class 55n.

Well I recieved an answer from a Randy, who was William R. Hurt's best friend. He was able to give me his service number. The had lost contact in 1965 in the Azores. I then wrote to the National Personnel Records Center to get some information.

They sent me back a RUDE letter stating it was "a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy, and is prohiobited"!!!! I then called them and gave them a piece of my mind stating that they could contact him and have him contact me!! They referred me to the VA Regional Office.

So I contact them. They tell me that he died in May of 2001, but gave me his address. I looked up the address online and it belongs to a Pat Hurt. I then called her and left a message.

Tonight I get a call back. She wasn't married to him when he was in the Air Force. But his son from his first marrige is also William R. Hurt jr. He is a retired Lt. Colonel from the Air Force!!

I will be sending him the ring. It is leaving tomorrow. One of my most prized rings is going to a son with the same name as his fathers and was also a USAF officer. How cool is that!!

Good job...:clapping:

That is awesome..... Some folks go overboard on the "a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy, and is prohiobited" issue... Just depends who you get that day. The main reason they are so anual is they get big time DON'T DO IT warnings (I worked at the REG VA Office for a bit)

But I am glad you didn't give up and I know the son is overjoyed with the return, I know I would if someone sent me my dad's ring.

Praise the good Lord you are on the GIVING end of this one, eh? I can assure you that Mr.Hurt's son cannot measure the gratitude he feels toward you at this very moment.

As for the personnel geeks, you did great. Just tell 'em to back up about ten feet and take a fly leap! Geesh.

It spite of it all you persevered and Mr. Hurt Jr. will never forget it. You da MAN, Bob. "Do unto others...<><
