In Cabelas catalog, the PLATINUM & the GOLD HUNTER priced at $579 & $279 respectively. The housing and controls setup are unique from ANY previous detectors. Does anyone know anything about them?

The Platinum and Gold Hunter have been available at Cabelas for a few month now. I bought the Platinum and postet the features, pictures and some first impressions on my www.fisherf75.com page.

These detectors are totaly new designs and Cabelas has the exclusive for now. The Platinum is a fine detector but once the Fisher F5 hits the streets for just $ 499 it may be the better choice with more features for less money. Anyway, i like the Platinum so much that i woudn't sell it, even if i buy the F5.

Andy which unit will do better in the salts sand water..F5,platinum...your reviews are top notch..thanks for all the effort..

In the manual of the Platinum it says about GB (automatic ground grab) that the detector can not be ground balanced to salt (water beaches).
The F5 GB will go down all the way to salt. So if you plan to do some salt water beach detecting the F5 should do better.
