A friend & I have been hunting the "islands" between the lanes on a local Boulevard in an area I stumbled upon. Evidently several years back the City of Lake Charles brought in some fill dirt that contained a jar of coins. In the process of spreading the dirt they broke the jar and scattered the coins over an area of about 50 feet in width by 120 feet in length, and the dirt layer is no more than 2 inches deep at its deepest. So far over 60 Indian Head pennies have come out, and over 150 dimes, all being Mercury, Barber and Seated. The oldest coin is an 1853 Seated Quarter [with arrows & rays], and it had an 1857 half dime in the same hole. An 1862 half dime was found atop the ground, as were many of the dimes and Indians-literally uncovered by the rain. At least 24 Walkers have been found including those with the the mint mark on the obverse, AND a 1921 plain Walker. The Wheat pennies are so numerous they have not even been counted or cleaned. And funny thing, the NEW COINS are several inches down, but some are also mixed right in with the old stuff. [I HAD to find a skunk-'64 Rosie at 4" #*^+!]
I guess it will soon be time to get out the 4" &5" loops. The coins are courtesy of a CZ, C$, & TEK-Mk1. I'm hitting coins mixed in with iron, courtesy of "WILD BILL" Ladd's programs :clapping:with the C$. Pixs to follow at a later date.

I have searched a few of boulevards and made some nice finds but this is the BEST. Your explanation of how they got there is probably correct. Wouldn't it be fun to try and find out where the dirt may have originally came from??? That area may hold more cashes. Or maybe the City used the fill dirt in another location around town.
Excellant!!!!

And when was it deposited? This is not the first time one of us has run into this situation.
[Another partner, the late James Carnahan was hunting a site and finding Seated & Barber coins atop SL quarters & Mercury dimes. One of his holes had the oldest coin, an 1800's Barber quarter come out first, followed by a later Barber quarter and finally a SL quarter. The SL quarter was ONE we all dream about, the 1918/17 in mint state condition. But it would not grade MS+ because of some slight corrosion-still it had a FULL HEAD, and ALL LINES ON THE SHIELD, and the Drapery on the Chest and Drapery Fold on the right leg was PERFECT. I wish I had bought it from him because the value today is in FOUR FIGURES.]
There is still a TON of signals on this site, most reading in the TAB range that need to be dug because of the multi-coin mixs we've dug-who knows, maybe a GOLD COIN is to be found? I've put TINFOIL on this location so there should be some new finds posted by him using his F-75 and SE with small/shooter loops.:detecting:
