USA officer spurs and a gold Compass.Whats the value?

Some friends of mine out of the blue asked me some questions today that made my jaw drop. They said in there possession they have a set of USA officer spurs and a gold officers Compass that have the markings of 1863 and the 7th on them. They were both preserved in what appears to be tar and burlap wrap for a long time and are in excellent condition. I was wondering what their value might be? I should be getting pictures in a couple of days but I have not seen them myself. Whats more shocking, is that I didn't know anything about them issuing officers compass's during the war. This might be a significant find but I'm not sure. please let me know what your thoughts are on the subject. thanks for all your help.

Anything with a date other than a manufacturers date should be held in suspect until proven otherwise. Could be OK but wait until you can post pictures. I see relics all the time that were found "in Grandpa's attic" or every other place you can imagine. Most are so new they're still smoking. Stay on the side of caution. I'll be glad to help when we can take a look at them. Good, clear pics will help. Thanks, David

So, what ever happened to the pics?
