US Calvary pocket knife?

This pocket knife was found last weekend during a hunt east of Sacramento, Ca., I'd like to think the knife is related to the gold rush days, or at least seems older than WW1. Can't seem to find any knife images similar to it, that would help id it.Besides the U S letters, there are approx 52 stars on each side. It sort of looks like an old mess kit kniffe too, look at old mess kit knifes.
