Upper Shaft

Will the upper shaft of my XS work on my Etrac? The shaft on the XS is the white one and the Etrac is black. They measure close to the same but the XS shaft is slightly larger. My Etrac probe is the older white kind and gets half the depth of the new one (black) on the XS. Thanks

I dont have any business trying to answer your question Jim. But it they use the same style clip id say they will... down side may be you could warp the clip over time with the slighly larger XS shaft and make it loose when you try using the Etrac shaft again. Have you talked to Ralph at sunray... he may have a simple solution to just changing the probes on the two shafts.

to put it on the Etrac,I just unplug it at the control box and use both the upper AND lower,as one unit.Everything fits up well. HH Bob :detecting:

The XS shaft is cut off straight and newer models are cut at a 45 degree angle. So the XS shaft will fit in but goes into the control housing ~ 1" less. It will have more of a wobble in this area and will work out over time more easily.

I just bought a used x-1 probe which is installed on a xs shaft. Im using it on my SE, it does go on the control housing very tight. I havent locked it in place with the cam lock because of the warning I read here just under the yellow note. http://www.sunraydetector.com/sun_ray_x-1_page.htm (WARNING: The Explorer XS & S upper shaft is not recommended for use with the new Explorer II/Quattro control housing and may damage the locking system.)

Im debating on cutting the upper shaft on the same angle as my original. I wonder if that will allow me to lock it into place without the damaging effects?

Has anyone here modifed the xs shaft to fit an SE?

Here is an answer to my own question on using a XS shaft on an SE and to possibly help someone in the future. Cutting on a 45 angle worked (make sure you are cutting the little ridge/bump of in the process) and I also used a dremmel with a little wire wheel to remove the paint on the shaft that goes into the housing. Also it will get inside the shaft to remove the sharp edge. Cutting the 45 makes it go in deeper and also it removes the ridge or bump that makes it tighter that possibly will break the locking mechanism. Removing the paint was the added touch to make it fit easier and lock easier.
I just finished sanding then painting the shaft black to match
