Upper Rod

Does any body have a problem of the upper rod slipping out of the control houseing after swinning the detector for a while. Mine does is there any way to fix this.It doesent do it with the x8 coil only on the stock 10.
Thanks for any help.
Ron

I have the same problem ever since they changed the control housing to fix the cracking problem.I think minelab may have made it a little bigger to help prevent cracking along with using a different plastic formula.

western australia.
p.s. i think you can wrap some plumbers tape around it to fix it.

Recently had my XS back from repairs + new case but was quite surprised when the top rod fell out, the camlock doesent bite down as hard as it used to, I was using the factory coil, and this happened after 5 hours of swinging on the beach,
will try the tape idea to make the shaft a tiny bit thicker where the cam presses on it.

Atleast 2 or 3 times a hunt maybe more. This is on the original housing with the stock coil. Heres one for you Ron Does tall grass give you a problem when rubbing against the stock coil cable. I find it near impossible to hunt in these areas. Might have to look into the 8 inch.

Chris, you should call minelab and tell them to send you another upper rod.. I have had my upper rod in place since getting the X1 probe and it has never come loose.. Now everyones got me wondering if I should even send mine in for the control box fix.. mine aint cracked bad and I think I can deal with that more than the rod coming loose.. what part of the cable is hitting the weeds? the small part thats out at the bottom? never noticed much falsing from weeds with my 10 inch, but to tell you the truth I dont use it much since getting the X8

just got my xs.back from minelab 2 weeks ago they replaced broken headphone jack and the also replaced the piece that had a TINY crack (control housing)i have never had problem with upper rod falling out but then i leave the upper rod on and never take it off i do have the x1 probe attached i just remove lower rod and turn coil 90 degrees compress lower rod and bag it love the machine

My rod falls out the time also, should I run tape the shaft to make it tighter?

Yes Jim I will send it in this winter for all the fixes. The problem is long grass hitting the few inches of cable that runs into the shaft. I tried taking the slack out but no difference. Obviously no one hunts the same type of sites as I do or this would be a concern already discussed. There is no way to hunt through this. Atleast 3 falses( for lack of a better term) per swing. I figure coins would still signal through but any low hit would be very hard to determine. On flat surfaces it is 100% stable all the time.

OK, I think I got you now.. Mine does false more if off the ground too high, so maybe its not the grass.. try running in ferrous sounds.. at least the falses will be low tones

David from dixie detector told me to put a balloon over the end of it and then put the upper rod back in. Sounds good to me.
Thanks David

The falses if you want to call them that, are low tones. The coil is no higher off the ground then in a normal situation. I know its the tall grass or weeds becouse its worst swinging to the right. The really strange thing is that I can touch the cable or rub with my finger and no noise. Sense doesn't make a difference either. I hunt in auto. Besides this the detector works a1. Can't believe I'm the only one having this problem. Actually my partner does have it too but I am unsure if it is severe as mine. He did try to build a shield so it must be bad enough.

C.C. I remember hunting a field here not to long ago and dont remember the detector doing that. Matter of fact ever singal i got there was something there when i dug. and the grass was about a foot tall only problem i had was the explorer would have worked better if it had a weed wacker attached to it.(lol) next time i hit that again i will pay more attion to it and let you know.

My did the samething, so I put a piece of electrical tape along the right and left sides of the shaft. That took up the extra play and I was out for 2 hour tonight swinging the WOT and it stayed nice and tight. Jerry

Sounds like it must be my detector becouse there is no way I could hunt in that situation. Problem is what the hell is it?? Got me stumped. Next time I'm out with my friend I'll switch for a bit and see how his explorer reacts.
