Upper and Lower Shaft Slop?

skyblast

New member
After four months I love love love my e-trac however I've noticed one thing that really bothers me. There seems to be quite a bit of play between the upper and lower shafts.

Try this. Put one hand on the grip and one foot on the coil. Then give a wiggle. How much play are you noticing? I've owned two lower shafts and both had lots of movement in them.

Curious to hear what the rest of you have to say.

Just checked mine extended to the length I detect at and its snug as a bug ina rug. I've had it since shortly after release... I've heard the rubber stopper can wear and need replacement eventually but all is well with mine so far.

Has yours always been this way or has the "wobble" developed over time? Hope you get it sorted...

I noticed the same thing on my machine about a year ago.
I was planning on getting a new lower leg or rubber liner - but as a quick fix I put two wraps of 2" wide clear packing tape around the top of the lower leg.
The tape did two things - it took all of the wobble out of the lower leg - and when I start to see the edge of the tape - I know that the leg is extended to the exact length I use it.

No ... you shouldn't have to put tape around the lower leg of a $1500.00 machine that's only four months old - to keep the coil from wobbling - but it works.

Good luck ! --- Mark

Thank you so much! I am on it.....

my e-trac came like this out of the box...
I own a safari and it did'nt have this problem
it makes me wonder if the seller could have sold me a refurbished unit???
There is a refurbished explorer on e-bay that look pretty new,
i have purchased my e-trac from this seller...

Mine is very snug at both joints. However I've had about 8 or so lower shafts with different coils and it looks like there is a difference by just a tad in the sizing . Keep in mind some could be off older explorers if you got the lower shaft from a person on the forum. Out if the 5 I have right now 2 are not as snug as the others. Also 2 of mine are tall man shafts, dang they are really tight going in when changing coils.

OK it's all taped up now and is very snug....almost too snug? I sure hope that over time the tape doesn't get bound up in the shaft? I'll try my best to leave the length where its at.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

its depends how much lower shaft slided off, construction is not the best, tape is solution or tall man shaft, to keep lower shaft deeper. good luck Stasys

When mine wobbles I check for the little metal plate that sits under the cam lock. It falls out from time to time. I have three shafts and two of them have done this. A pain in the rear, MineLab.

If you will notice, the lower shaft is really round, but at the top of it, it has a rounded off squared end. That's so it will slide and hold somewhat tight into the squareness of the upper shaft. But, why didn't they just make the whole lower shaft square like the explorers? Yes, mine moves a little also, but it doesn't bother me.......NGE
