garrett makes a great turn on and go machine.yes it is simple and easy to use and you will be finding things your first time out hunting.but after hunting with it for some time you will learn a lot more about it as you go.iam still learning new things about mine as i go along.i have upgraded my 550 several times with a 750 1250,1500 and even tried the 250 after reading so many good reviews on the forum.yet the only one i still have is my 550.the one thing that i have learned is that i don't need to upgrade my machine i just needed to learn how to use the one i have.i have made some great finds with it over the past year including a 1854 seated dime which is pretty good in the area i am in.in my opinion you don't need the latest and greatest you just need to learn the one you have.for me i think i will stick with what i have seems this old dog will still hunt pretty good.
HAPPY HUNTING WOODY

There is a lot of truth and wisdom in your words. There are lots of people out there who bounce from one to the next to the next to next, always looking for that magic machine which will find treasures even where there isn't any. I think you enjoy your metal detecting hobby much more then someone who is the latter.

When I was in Sydney on Tuesday, I dropped into the metal detecting shop there. They Are Minelab dealers with a small smattering of other brands. I saw an older style of Garrett 550 with the older round coil on it. I didn't fire it up (I wish I had, but only had a short time) but I did pull it down off the wall. Man! that detector has the sweetest balance of any detector that I've ever held Any brand! I almost posted about it, I was that impressed.
You are spot on about having the latest and greatest. Knowing your detector well far outstrips features. I've got an older Explorer and put a lot of time on the Ace. Due to that time, I was more successful with the Ace than I have been with the Explorer. Both great machines, but it just comes down to being more familiar with a particular detector.
All the best.
Mick Evans.

I've had one season under my belt and used the ACE. I am far from feeling that I need an upgrade yet. I am interested in getting the bigger coil though for a certain park up here. It is refreshing to come to this site and read positive remarks about the ACE. I do not pretend that this is a top of the line unit with the deepest possible reach. I do however know that it is a REAL detector and not a toy, and that it has REAL capabilities in the REAL world. For around here, 6-8 inches+ is a realistic working depth for just about anything that I can find. Non Aboriginal habitation has only been around here for 100-150 years so I don't need 12 inch capability.

Yeah the 550 is a great little detector and it loves rings. I'm going to have to drag mine out and play with it a bit. I tested that puppy a long time ago.
