Upgrades for Older MXT?

New member
It's been quite a while since I've looked at new metal detectors and I see that White's now has an MXT Pro.

I bought my MXT in 2005. Does White's offer any sort of upgrades to a vintage MXT - like software or hardware?

If so, are they worth it?

Also, what are the improvements the Pro offers and is it worth it to sell a used MXT for the latest and greatest?

Thanks.

[size=large]i loved my MXT PRO and regret selling it. the only differances are it has tones carried over from the M-6 as well as Ground-Grab. i can only say i liked it. and the Back light. very helpful in low light. as to whether it's worth it? only you know for yourself if it is. some have said it's not. others say you bet. i for one never had the old MXT so i can't tell if i would have gone for the upgrade. but i did love that machine with my D2 coil.

I've had my MXT since they came out and I can't see paying for the upgrade to the Pro. It does have the multiple tones, powder coat paint, and the back light, but as performance, it's all the same. It's just a personal choice as stated. ME? No, I wouldn't waste my money.

I read on another forum the Pro uses a 'hotter' board and is more sensitive.
I am going to wait and save my money for the MXT Ltd Edition with TX boost to come out.

To answer your question. There is no upgrade for the MXT. The first MXT is the same as the latest MXT. The MXT Pro has the three features addressed in the above posts. As far as performance, the MXT and the Pro are the same. Only you can determine if a Backlight, Tone ID, and the Ground Grab are something you want to spend you money on. I have both and I prefer the Pro. I myself don't understand why someone would buy a new MXT rather than a used MXT Pro for the same money or less. These things are so reliable that the warranty doesn't make any difference to me. Many of my detectors were bought new (like my V3i), but there's not a thing wrong with get a clean used White's detector.

Thanks for the replies, folks.

I think I'll stick with my classic MXT. I took it out on a beach in Maui this morning and got clad, trash, and a rhinestone-studded bling thing that was exciting for a moment or two.

Good for you! I think it's a wise choice. Congrats on the coins and bling also. HH, Nancy

I have the old mxt too and I would like to have backlight and groundgrab, but I enjoy having both relic modes changed by pulling a trigger

Ground grab is a redundant feature on the MXT Pro display pod, it is exactly the same as track and lock toggle on the control box. If you are seaching and have the ground toggle on lock, you can press the ground grab button on the display and update the ground setting. It is the same as pushing the toggle to track then back to lock.

I like that "exciting for a moment or two" what more can you ask for. Sounds like a good time.

The MXT of a dozen or so years ago, or your MXT, or the most recent production MXT are all essentially the same detector. There are no 'upgrades', and the only difference has been the search coils offered with them new. Most came with the 950 and some came with the 12".

Let's call them "changes" and not "improvements" because we often see some 'change,' but it's not really an 'improvement' for everyone.

To keep it short and sweet, I own a 5 year old MXT and it's still one of the best detectors on the market. I've bought and sold all the high-end units from Minelab, Fisher, Garrett, etc. because none of them out performed my MXT.

I've considerd whether I wanted to upgrade from my standard MXT to the Pro also. Finally decided that the changes would be nice, but not especially crucial to me so I'm still using the standard. However, if I were considering a new MXT, I'd definitely go for the Pro version as the extra changes would be somewhat useful to me.

I've passed my MXT to my 10 year old son to use and learn on. I love the machine but was eager for a new challenge. So I bought myself a VX3. Haven't received it yet but am curious how its going to compare. It's like an addiction or lost love. I love my MXT and consider myself a pro with it. Used it for 7 years. Am I going to be partial to it despite having a new detector? I hope not. Well see.....
