Upgraded F75 Broken...

FindandDetect

New member
I just tried fireing up the detector and I'm so pissed right now.. The detector starts off quiet then starts pulsing slowly then gradually gets stronger and quicker... tried to GB and nope... won't do that either... switched coils, still does it... lowered it to 0 sensitivity and still does it... I upgraded my detector just so it won't work? I really think it was probably FedEx's fault... It sat on the truck since Saturday morning 4am... It's been below 30 degrees the whole time. :veryangry:

Try a new and different set of batteries?

I bet thats it..What Rick said...good pick up on the clues there Rick...cold outside etc..the cold shouldnt hurt it FND...I keep my F70 outside in my car year round and hunt in the winter with it in below zero temps, and have for the past 4yrs..hope everything works out for you...let us know what the final deal is for our own learning..
Mud.

I just tried mine in my garage. Even at 0 sensitivity in DE mode, the flourescent lights make mine squak on any frequency setting.

This detector runs happily at 99 sensitivity 30' from my garage

These detectors have extremely sensitive antennas (the coils) and verynhigh gain recievers.

I've never had any problems before. I've had a F75 for 4 years. And I tried it outside also. If this is EMI then my machine got worse with it... Not better. I was able to run inside at sensitivity at 80+ before the upgrade with no EMI problems.

I think I found the issue... it's the dimmer switches in my house. I kept my machine on and went around turning everything on and off one by one and they make my detector go NUTS. I've never had an issue with them before... done plenty of air tests in the house, ect. But then again I usually don't air test at night. I did go outside last night and I was still getting it even more than 50ft from the house. If it is EMI I'm going to say right now I'm not impressed with the upgrade... I'll try it somewhere else (I do have power lines about 40 yards away) but I've never had this much issue with the F75 before the upgrade... and yah all the coils do the same thing. The 15" coil is a lot quieter now. I was able to run full sens on boost with a little bit of chatter in the test garden. I'm going to grab my buddies non upgraded F75 and do some comparisons to see if somethings wrong still... Maybe I was just used to discriminating up to 6 and it seemed like it was better at handling EMI than this.
I guess I overreacted, but we'll see with the regular F75.

Thanks for the update, FND...I sure hope thats what it is....house noises and all that...I look forward to hearing more as you experiment.:clapping:
I do know these F rigs are hot...almost too much hot for me...I seldom run over a mid 50's sens on mine...so I am interested in hearing about anyone that can run full power in field with enough stability to not miss a silver..

When it comes to electrical interference via the power lines, there's nothing more wicked than an old dimmer switch dialed down to almost off. The old style were banned back in the late 1980's or so, power companies didn't like either the electrical interference or the horrible power factor that wasted energy they couldn't bill for. The replacements had some combination of zero current switching and filtering. I presume the ones legal for sale nowadays use faster switching schemes in combination with power factor correction.

Back in the mid 1980's, the Fisher factory was experience severe problems with electrical interference, It was everywhere in the plant. We determined it was coming from the power lines. The question then became how it was getting onto the power lines. We traced the source to a residence a few hundred feet down the alley. And then called the power company to tell them they had a problem that needed to be addressed. They sent a guy out who verified what we'd told them, and then contacted the property owner. They went on an explore in the house and traced it to an unused bedroom where the owner had a dimmer switch cranked 'way down to use a 100 watt light bulb as a night light. He told the power company guy "I'm an electrician, I understand the problem but just never thought of it until now. I'll change the dimmer out to a new one this afternoon." They had a good laugh and the next day the problem was gone.

I have three of them, and all in the kitchen. All of them act pretty much the same way. I used my V3i last night and it pointed me to the kitchen. But once I got there I couldn't find the source (I had the lights on) and thought the EMI was WAAAAYY too strong to be a stupid dimmerswitch (I think only one dimmerswitches on). This house was built in the 90's (round push/dial dimmerswitches). Are there dimmerswitches that don't act like this?

If you are in FA mode, ecpect a lot of reaction to EMI. This mode is EXTREMELY sparky. Also, you need to select 9.0 and then 9.1 on a factory restore start up, then see what happens outside. This puts it in DE mode and it should be quiet. If it isn't, then you need to try the other start up. If it is still noisy, then gomthrough all 7 frequencies, one at a time, giving it time to "kick in" on each frequency.

This is not a mild mannered detector, it's more like a racehorse - easilu spooked.

appreciate the reply Dave, makes sense...you must have found the 'bad house' just walking up the alley with a detector.

Our condo, build in 2002/3, purchased in 2004 here in Toronto had 2 or 3 dimmers. I noticed they got unreasonably hot and hummed so replaced them all with simple
on/off switches pretty quickly....didn't purchase my first detector, a fisher of your design, till 2006.

appreciate you and your team's efforts on the updates....frozen up here now (and no 'new' F75's anyway) but plan to purchase one in March for next season.

should be fun....cheers....

It's just crazy how this one dimmer switch can cause all this through the whole house (with sens. at 0) and 50ft from the house (anything above the second stage of sens.)

Tells you how often I detect/air test in the dark with the dimmer switch on.

I was just mad last night.. got home from a busy day at work and figured nothing could cause that much EMI because with the DST on and sens. at 0 on default I figured it should be silent.

The FA is very hot and my video shows that too when I'm testing recovery speed.
