update: winter project: Sovereign GT extension cord / utility pouch project

A big thank you goes out to Mr. Goodmore and Mr. Ron from Michigan for helping me.

So today I received my 6 pin microphone extension cable and the Advanced Tactical Dump Utility Pouch ordered from eBay. I decided to un-solder all the wires from The 6 pin microphone (the side that hooks to the control box ) The default wire setup looks like this:

pin # 1 = white
pin # 2 = blue & black
pin # 3 red
pin # 4 empty
pin # 5 yellow & ground
pin # 6 empty.

The side that goes through the utility pouch, your obviously going to un-solder all the wires. Next, feed the cable through the hole in the utility pouch. Now you are going to re-attach all the wires in the following order

(at least this is how I soldered them all back)
PIN # 1 = WHITE
PIN # 2 = BLACK
PIN # 3 = RED
PIN # 4 = BLUE
PIN # 5 YELLOW AND CUT THE GROUND WIRE.

For the other end that hooks to my meter this is what I did:
pin # 1 (white) - left alone.
Pin # 2 un-soldered the black and blue. First, I re-attach the black wire to pin # 2. Then soldered the blue wire to pin # 4.
PIN # 3 (red) left alone
PIN # 5 (yellow and ground) Here, I carefully took my wire cutters and cut off the ground wire. Now just the yellow wire is hooked up.
I put everything back together, hooked to my meter and gave it a test. Works perfectly!

The GT control box fits perfectly into the utility pouch. The unit can also be covered in case it is misting out. or you can fortify the idea with placing a plastic bag over the top. Two side ammo pouches could hold some extraction tools. The only thing I wish they did (when designing the little pouch in the front) is to have placed zippers on both sides so I can zip up on both ends to contain my good finds. Since It wasn't designed for our application, I will put a little plastic bag inside and that should work fine. I will also have my old pouch with me for my junk finds. The mic cord is perfect and is nice and flexible. The only thing I want to perfect is the meter connector. I would like to somehow secure it to my shaft or meter bracket so it doesn't move. Any ideas? Thanks for looking - Jim

When it comes to securing wires and coil cables I always use a silicone tape. The stuff makes a real neat job out of a mess. And it is waterproof. And with one slice of a knife it pops right off and leaves no sticky mess. I also wrapped the speaker hole on my Garrett propointer with it.

This stuff works wonders. So much better than sticky tape, Velcro or zip ties.

I also cut a hole big enough for the connector of the GT to stick out the bottom of the pouch. I sealed the edge with a flame for about half a second. It allows the GT to sit all the way down in. Just screw the cable on the bottom. It is up to you. But over all I hope you like the pouch.

Thanks Goodmore for the idea. I wanted to take stress off the meter cable and that tie is all I have. In time, I may just make the hole bigger to allow the connector to slide through the bottom. I started thinking I just may use this bag for more then just metal detecting. I know you used a flame after creating the hole. I am wondering if there is a grommet or some type of plastic device to place around the hole after burning it? (Similar to what was there before you made the hole bigger) I really like the pouch it is really well made. - Jim

Jim you have a mcanical aptitude and sighns of Inteligance , this proves you did not evolve from apes is it easy to swing now ?

LOL you are too funny. Yes, the extension is nice and flexible and very easy to swing. Easy to detach from meter line. Place detector in back seat, hip pouch can stay on my belt until next location and easier to dump out my finds at the end of my trip. I'd rather replace a $20.00 extension cord then my meter or coil cord. Should of done this sooner. - Jim
