Update on my Lightweight Explorer II...

Here is an update on my Explorer II project. I am using an X-Terra shaft setup. I cut an extra lower shaft and put about a foot behind the arm cup. I have the battery and Sun Ray probe mounted there. I can already tell this will really help on balance. I am hoping for a weight savings but will be happy with better balance and ergonomics. I have another Explorer II with Sun Ray probe, so I will weigh them both when done. Hopefully I will like what it weighs!

I am waiting on coil wire attachment parts now. They should be here this week. Then I can get-r-done. I will post some pics when done.

Thanks again to folks here for help with my questions.

I have seen some people just attach a small brick under the battery compartment, duct tape it there. It also makes for a good stand.....NGE

Took both the new "Lightweight" and std. Explorer to the post office, weighed them up and ... drum roll ... The new lightweight one is 1.6 oz. heavier, cccrrraaappp!

I took it out hunting a week ago and really do like the ergonomics and balance. The Pro coil felt like my little Sun Ray Stealth-8". The 8" felt like it was not even there. With the probe and battery behind my elbow, the machine balances on my index finger position. No more holding up the nose. So that is a huge improvement.

I could not stand the thought of this project ending up heavier, even though it was only 1.6 oz. So I tore into it again. I moved the headphone jack to the control box. This eliminated three strands of wire about 18", an external jack, a mounting gizmo (brass wire) and tape. Then, I am still in the process of moving the Sun Ray probe box to the control box mounting bracket I made. This will eliminate three coil wire fittings, a foot of coil wire, the switch box and two switch box mounting clamps plus Velcro tape.

I am hoping for a quarter pound reduction, but I know I have removed the 1.6 oz for sure.

I have about eight more connections to make this morning and hopefully I will be done. I will take some pics and post the final weight when done.

Thanks and HH - BF

Maybe have someone custom make control housing and shafts completely out of carbon fiber. Weigh all new pieces before "tearin' into it again"........NGE
